Good article although I have a hard time seeing Larry Page as a 21st century analog of Thomas Edison.
Is Google today's General Electric?

Our chief business commentator, John Gapper, argues: "Google seems to me not Microsoft in the 1980s but General Electric in the late 19th century – the age of electrification. Like GE, Google is a multifaceted industrial enterprise riding a wave of technology with an uncanny ability not only to invent far-reaching products but also to produce them commercially."

Do you agree?

Just read this quote from Shakespeare that describes some of the conversations I've been having at work perfectly:

“Marry, sir, they have committed false report;
moreover, they have spoken untruths; secondarily,
they are slanders; sixth and lastly, they have
belied a lady; thirdly, they have verified unjust
things; and, to conclude, they are lying knaves.”

Not a short read, but well worth it.
"I’d reached rock bottom. I was burned out. Fried. Done. Toast. I was aware that my daily routine and lifestyle were unsustainable.

I considered fleeing to a remote island for a few weeks, but I realized I wasn’t craving physical escape. I didn’t actually want to be alone. I just wanted to be mentally free of obligations, most of which asserted themselves in some digital fashion. I decided that my digital detox would start at 5 p.m. on Friday, December 14, 2012, and last through Monday, January 7, 2013. Twenty-five days seemed appropriate for the depth of cleansing I desired."

FT chart of the day: The new leaders of economic growth

The shift in the global economy has been clear for some time, but this year is the pivot point. In 2013, for the first time since the industrialisation of the 19th century, emerging economies such as China and India will produce the majority of the world's goods and services.
