An article by me in the SF Chron Insight section summarizing what I believe are the qualities that go into making a great leader.
In January 2009, after my crew and I landed our crippled Airbus 320 safely in the Hudson River with no loss of life, I found myself thrust into a spotlight I had never sought - and sometimes found dif...

we saw you on tv last night and all three of us went to our knees to pray. Jets again today. I am still being stalked and bullied by SNA.  Please Sully, I am suicidal over this. I am embarrassed to say so, but I can't take much more. We have written you so many times and it seems you are not hearing us. We have been stalked and bullied by the John Wayne Airport for six years. Every single place we go. This man wants my wife dead.  Please make him stop. PLEASE BEFORE IT'S TOO LATE. PLEASE I AM BEGGING YOU TO STOP THIS NIGHTMARE. 4 PATHS OVER THIS 1/4 MILE HILL FOR FIVE YEARS. 125 JETS OVER OUR HOME ALONE IN ONE DAY. PLEASE MAKE HIM LEAVE. MENTALLY ILL, CRIMINALLY SO.  PLEASE STOP THIS BEFORE I LOVE MY WIFE. PLEASE

My thoughts are with the millions of Americans affected by the storm. Lorrie and I send our encouragement to all and our gratitude to the brave first responders throughout the region. I know first-hand how important that response is. American Red Cross was there with blankets for our passengers on Flight 1549 in January 2009. You can make a difference by donating to the Red Cross relief effort: http://www.redcross.org/

Making the Best, Better
Introduction

Named one of the world’s 100 most influential people by TIME magazine, Captain Chesley B. “Sully” Sullenberger is an international hero, propelled into the spotlight after safely guiding a US Airways jetliner to an emergency landing on the Hudson River known as the “Miracle on the Hudson.” An accomplished pilot, instructor and aviation safety expert, he believes education, teamwork, preparation and creating a culture of safety can improve any organization. Sully’s decision-making ability and commitment to improving an industry have helped him to emerge as a model by which others measure success. As founder of Safety Reliability Methods, a consulting company dedicated to management, safety and performance, Sully serves as Aviation and Safety Expert for CBS News. He is the author of the NY Times best-selling book "Highest Duty: My Search for What Really Matters." His second book, "Making a Difference: Stories of Vision and Courage from America’s Leaders", was released on 5/15/12.
