Many people have asked me why I celebrate this day. Some ask because they have mixed feelings about what July 4th represents or don’t understand patriotism coming from me, an immigrant to this country. I wrote a post a few years ago about how seeing my kids blossom in the land they were born has given me a sense of patriotism. Also, I want to instill in them that pride and love for their country because I know how empowering it is to have a strong identity, and part of that is to know where you are from and where you belong. #4thOfJuly #AmericanLatinos #MKBkids #Celebrate #IndependenceDay #July4th2017 #RedWhiteAndBlue #Patriotism #Motherland #Freedom

If we continue to play the cat-and-mouse game of the other we are creating a fearful society for everyone, in which ‘the other’ is the most terrifying person there is. Or, if we see the opportunity we have at this point in history, we can choose to see the virtues of this diverse environment while creating the model society of the future. #AmericanLatinos #EmbracingDiversity #MulticulturalLiving #MKBkids #DiversityAndInclusion #Peace #CreateUnity #Understanding #Culture #Language #BeautyInDiversity #Paz #Diversidad #Multiculturalism #Balance #HumanSurvival #DiverseJourney #Empathy #Strenght

I have been thinking about identity a lot lately and talking to people about the meaning of afrolatinidad for those of us who identify with it. I believe that by asserting the terms Afro-Latino/Afro-Latina and/or Black Latino/Black Latina we are bringing to light a community that is often overlooked and we are helping to change old narratives showing pride and reclaiming spaces that have traditionally being denied. Did you have a quinces party? If not, how did you feel about not having a quinceañera? I was sad not to get one, but it helped me mature and understand that my family couldn’t afford one. Today #OnTheBlog I tell you the story of my fifteenth birthday and how I used to dream being Adela Noriega from the telenovela Quinceañera, dancing surrounded by flowers. http://buff.ly/2tNRgB1 #AmericanLatinos #TheYearOf40 #Memories #Storytelling #RememberTheTime #Memoir #MulticulturalLiving #MemoryBook #WhenIWas15 #DR #Dominican #GrowingUpDominican #Caribbean #SantoDomingo #Personal #PhotoProject #MKBKids #MyLife #1992

We are at a point in the history of humanity that such encounter already happened; we are experiencing the ultimate test of our humanity, to see if we can live with one another, to love, accept and understand each other so we can work on the challenges our planet is facing as a global community. #MulticulturalLiving #DiversityAndInclusion #CreateUnity #MKBKids #GlobalVillage #GlobalEmbrace #EmbracingDiversity #Quotes #RiseAbove #Understanding

This week I found myself remembering the teen emotional rollercoaster of being 14 and shared 3 lessons that I want my future teens to know when they become teenagers as I continue my 40-year journey down memory lane. http://buff.ly/2rIoHI8 #AmericanLatinos #TheYearOf40 #Memories #Storytelling #RememberTheTime #Memoir #MulticulturalLiving #MemoryBook #WhenIWas14 #DR #Dominican #GrowingUpDominican #Caribbean #SantoDomingo #Personal #PhotoProject #MKBKids #MyLife #1991

For women and girls there is so much value attach to hair, our beauty, our femininity and even our professionalism can come into question in account of hair. Because of my experiences I want my daughter to have a healthy love of her curly hair, but I don’t want her to attach her personal value to it. That’s why I loved she decided to donate her hair with me so she can see herself beautiful even if her hair isn’t long, and also to recognize the importance of giving from the best of us. Read the story #OnTheBlog.

Being a teenager in Caribbean in the 1990s was special and definitely different than what life was like in the United States. The relaxed Caribbean life, the racy storylines in music and novelas, and everything in between. Today #OnTheBlog, I’m revisiting 1990, when I became a teenager at the beginning of that wonderful decade. http://buff.ly/2so3VfS #AmericanLatinos #TheYearOf40 #Memories #WayBackWednesday #Storytelling #RememberTheTime #Memoir #MulticulturalLiving #MemoryBook #WhenIWas13 #DR #Dominican #GrowingUpDominican #Caribbean #SantoDomingo #Personal #PhotoProject #MKBKids #MyLife #1990
