Freedom of Information on the Internet
Introduction
+INTERNET FREEDOM was first started by +Marc Rossmiller and few members who met via anti-SOPA campaigns during late January and early February 2012. We are a group of ordinary G+ers who have lots of passion but lack in organizing skills and experience. During the first few weeks of our formation, we went through numerous trials and tribulations, including change of ownerships, being called "fake profile" and "spammers", and our first "failed" hangout.

We have among our managers people from all walks of life, from high school student(s) to someone who may qualify for AARP membership, from unemployed to budding entrepreneur, from “socialist” to “libertarian”, and from “Penguin” to “Most Interesting Man in the World”.

However, we all took each other at face value and re-organized ourselves through an election process. On February 13, 2012, an election took place, and we are proud to declare that +INTERNET FREEDOM is "Under New Management" and Google+ has witnessed the birth of one of the  first democratically organized Social Media Advocacy Groups sworn to fight for the Freedom of the Internet!

+INTERNET FREEDOM is still going through re-organization process and may still appear "chaotic" for awhile. But we will get our house in order ASAP to kickoff the "BlackMarch/Blackout2012/???" Campaign and "Discover Indies, Boycott Corporate" Campaign soon.

We're looking for few good G+ers to join our growing "rag-tag" team of managers in the fight for INTERNET FREEDOM. Anyone interested can volunteer by contacting our Secretary +Bob Mulholland here on G+ or at Bob@internetfreedominitiaitve.org, or by contacting any of the committee chairs listed below.

Finally, we are also looking for Urgent Action Alert (UAA) subscribers who'll receive notifications on our UAA posts in order to quickly spread messages on urgent matter, we promise we'll use the "power" sparingly (no more than 5 a week).

Here are our first "democratically" elected officers and committee chairs.

President ~ +Ann McPherson
Vice President ~ +Shauna Myers
Secretary ~ +Bob Mulholland
Editorial Committee(EC) ~ +Desiaire Rickman +Euro Maestro

Research Committee(RC) ~ +Simone Oech

Internet Freedom is still important!

SOPA was killed in the US Senate, again! Yay!

Should we restart up the internet freedom page?

Alexis Ohanian, co-founder of Reddit was very active in the campaigns to fight SOPA, CISPA, and PIPA.

Alexis Ohanian will be interviewed by +Euro Maestro
on Wednesday at 11 am Eastern

Watch Alexis Ohanian live this Wednesday, Ask your questions

A throttled iPhone user took AT&T to court and won $850.
A customer who filed a complaint against AT&T after having his wireless data speeds throttled has come out the victor. Read this blog post by Josh Lowensohn on Apple Talk.

In Germany, pensioners are protesting against #ACTA today. They do so because they helped to establish the free and democratic societies after the two world wars and do not want those achievements and rights to be diminished by #SOPA, #ACTA, #IPRED or any other new agreements.

In spite of all the talk about Freedom the US (and Europe) do love their regulations - this may be one of the basic causes for all those efforts to get SOPA, ACTA, etc.

... and they complain about overregulation in Europe!

Two forces make American laws too complex. One is hubris. Many lawmakers seem to believe that they can lay down rules to govern every eventuality. Examples range from the merely annoying (eg, a proposed code for nurseries in Colorado that specifies how many crayons each box must contain) to the delusional (eg, the conceit of Dodd-Frank that you can anticipate and ban every nasty trick financiers will dream up in the future). Far from preventing abuses, complexity creates loopholes that the shrewd can abuse with impunity.

A good summary as well as a great suggestion that would also make great sense for Europe in Techdirt:

http://www.techdirt.com/articles/20120220/05090417813/economist-notices-that-us-is-getting-buried-under-costly-useless-over-regulation.shtml

We should take that much, much further. First, I don't think it should just be "big regulations." Let's sunset everything, and force Congress to re-evaluate laws already on the books. Along those lines, all new laws (and any re-authorizations of old laws) should come with clear and stated metrics that will be used the next time around to determine if the bill was successful. If the metrics are not met, then the bill should not be allowed to be re-authorized without significant changes. It seems like rules like that might actually take us in a reasonable direction towards passing effective regulations, rather than the mess that we have today. It still amazes me that legislation doesn't already come with metrics to determine if they actually do their job.

#freedom #regulation
AMERICANS love to laugh at ridiculous regulations. A Florida law requires vending-machine labels to urge the public to file a report if the label is not there.
