This article asserts that increased deregulation has dismantled long-standing policies that prevented concentration of wealth in big cities. It further asserts that these further policies were a long tradition in this country, one example of which includes the two houses of congress, with one having non-proportional representation. Proportional representation alone would tend to favor the more populated, and wealthier, states.

Like a lot of historical reasoning, it's hard to tease out just how causal the relationship is. Nevertheless, the trend toward urbanization, and increased geographical concentration of wealth, is undeniable. It's interesting to realize that this is not inevitable, but could be the by-product of deliberate political choice.
