Let's make it easy. [by Mike Macgirvin]
#Decentralised #Identity :
In order to share web pages and stuff privately in a decentralised #network , you need to know who is looking at them. Eg. you need decentralised identity. Diaspora has decentralised communications, it doesn't have decentralised identity. So all you can share privately in Diaspora are posts. You can't have private photo albums for instance unless you send every freaking photo album privately to everybody you want to see it. That doesn't scale and leaves your private photos on pods all over the internet. When all you really need to do is keep them all on your hub/pod/thing and know who is looking at them. That's what decentralised identity is.
Now - if you have decentralised identity - you can share anything privately. Web pages, photo albums, event calendars, spreadsheets, files, videos, chatrooms, social network profiles, anything. And we do.
This is Red. We can share anything with whoever you want and block them from those you don't want. Anybody in the network.
Bonus points if you can do this across the entire #network without asking for a password on every single site a person visits.
This is zot.
Imagine not worrying about getting #emails that passwords were compromised on a site you visited briefly 3 years ago. In the matrix, you have one password and you only enter it to get into your own hub/pod/thing. The rest of the matrix authenticates you automatically and invisibly as you visit the different pods/hubs/things that you're allowed to see.
In order to not have to make friends all over again with your friends because your pod shuts down (for an hour or forever), you need to recognise that Bob Smith is Bob Smith. He might be posting from firstname.lastname@example.org today, but that isn't who he is. Tomorrow he might show up at email@example.com. Sure Diaspora let's you export/import accounts, but they're still tied to a server and all your friends have to share with you on the new server if you do this. Zot doesn't hardwire accounts to your hub/pod. Your identity is unique.
This is especially important when you have private stuff like files and photos. You don't want to go through and change everything you ever shared with firstname.lastname@example.org just because Bob moved. You could have hundreds of thousands of photos and files and webpages and chatrooms and whatnot. You want it to just work wherever Bob Smith happens to be today.
That is zot.
