Emulating the past is not new.

Recreating bullshit isn't "pioneering," it's failing to recognize that the past systems are broken.

Scalability & Fear - Confessions of a Lucky Storyteller

People hate to fail and that hatred of failure creates fear - fear of trying.

Throw in few heaping truckloads of Fear of looking foolish, making a mistake, appearing out of control, being ridiculed by peers, family, co-workers…

Wow. Now even I’m afraid!

I’m more afraid of lethargy, of waiting, of complacency, of a lot of things that overpower my fear of looking like a jackass.

When you fundraise online, fear of failure to reach your goal, which is very much in public, is a reality that stops many from trying. I spoke with a filmmaker whose fear of wiping out on Kickstarter or Indiegogo kept them from moving forward with a project.

The alternative for the filmmaker was waiting for a ‘yes,’ a plan that had resulted in a lot of meetings and passes, for years.

My advice: scale your fear of failure.

I designed PlayShorts as both a series and as a fundraising campaign to scale to success, or taking the glass-half empty view, scale to failure. The goal was to tell stories, not raise $8,000.

Because I didn’t fail to reach the goal of telling stories, raising a little over the half budget goal, which is technically a failure, had little to do with my measurement of success.

PlayShorts was a giant success.

How big is my audience?

How many people are interested in seeing short films of short plays?

Those were the two basic questions I needed to answer with PlayShorts Vol. 1.

I have my answer. The next time I ask those same questions will be when I make Vol. 2 of PlayShorts. But the next time I ask, instead of scripts and mediocre video of plays being performed live, I’ll have a couple examples of the finished product.

The answer to those questions for Vol. 2 will result in a new set of answers to scale the project to.

My guess, gonna be making more than two shorts in Vol. 2.

I'm about to get my panel at the Bushwick Film Festival! I'm on "Meet The Storytellers" today.

I like that title a lot better than meet the content creators.

I've written a lot of scripts.

They float on humming hard drives, many never to be seen.

It bums me out, to be honest.

The cool thing, I've been able to throw a lifejacket to a few of them, including this one...

When there’s a giant wave potentially headed your way, you don’t go looking for more waves and I didn’t.

The entertainment industry is unnecessary - Confessions of a Lucky Storyteller

I love hanging out at a bookstore or a “record” store, always have, but I don’t
need to in order to listen to music or read a book.

There’s still a few out there, but they are barely hanging on, because they are unnecessary. Again, I wish that wasn’t the case, but it is.

If you had said that the music and publishing industries were unnecessary a decade ago, most would disagree with you. They’d point to changes in the marketplace, but no one would sign a death certificate for those industries.

Today, there’s a long line of people willing to sign off on the reality that the music and publishing industries are dead.

You can record music, write a book and distribute both right now, no waiting, no gatekeeper, no agent, nada.

Same with telling stories with moving images - if you can write, direct, shoot, edit & distribute your story directly to your audience, then you don’t need a studio, network or production company to make that happen.

And there’s one very simple reason, the entertainment industry is unnecessary.

When I did get “picked” to act, write, direct or do stand up, it felt good. Of course it did, there was proof that what I did was worthy of being paid to do so.  If there were any doubters in my life,  getting hired was a great way to shut them up.
