We Don't T9 Anymore People...

T9 was that first stage of texting where you had to hit the same key up to 3 times in order to get a letter out.. so texted developed many of the shortforms we know today...

... But we don't T9 anymore.... so really folks.. next time you are about to type K instead of OK... I hope you are using that time saved for world peace, curing a disease... or catching up on your latest TV PVRs... ;)

Do You Think Things Happen For A Reason?

Fate or random chaos? Which side do you believe? Do we go through life experiencing things we need to... Or is everything just chances?

An iPhone Users Switch to Android

A few weeks ago I made the switch from my iPhone 4S to a Nexus 5.  Like most technology decisions I make, it wasn’t made lightly.  I would also emphasize it wasn’t a choice I made because of who my employer is as there is pretty much no pressure to do that whatsoever.  Heck, my boss is an unabashed Apple fan who probably cringed when he approved my phone.  But when I evaluated my usage and what was important to me Android just came out ahead.  Here is my take.

Integration
Android just wins this hands down.  I use a lot of Google services. Gmail, Maps, Google+,  Hangouts, etc.  I like these all better than any of the closest competitors and I like them all much more on an Android Device than an iPhone.  But even if I didn’t use Google services I probably still would have switched.  Why?  Because I definitely don’t like most of the default Apple services.  I like choice.  I don’t want to be tied down to the default app Apple chooses for me.  If I don’t like their keyboard or their maps, I want to choose something else.

Google Voice
I’ve written before about my strategy for saving money on mobile phone plans.  One of the key things is that I use Google Voice for my calls.  With an iPhone, there is no way to set it up such that all my outbound calls use my Google Voice number.  By default, that is what happens on my Android device.  This greatly simplifies my life as I don’t have to worry if I’m calling people from the number they are going to recognize from me.

The Camera
It’s not all rainbows and sunshine on the Android side.  I would still tell you the iPhone camera is better.   The images come out a little stronger and that slow-mo feature on the 5S is pretty cool.  But I believe we have finally come to the diminishing returns.  The Nexus 5 Camera is definitely to the point of “good enough”.  With the HDR option, it is actually pretty damn good in low light and in high contrast situations.  But this factor alone just wasn’t worth it to me.

My Investment
… or lack thereof.  This is one where I can have some empathy for others but it doesn’t affect me.  The #1 reason I hear people won’t switch is their investment is tied up in iOS.  Whether it be Apps or music, people feel they would have to rebuild everything if they ever switched over.  For me this is a non-issue.  I never purchase music that is locked in and I actually don’t have any paid apps which I feel like I would miss.   If you do, I get it, but I would honestly wonder why you spent so much on paid apps.

The Keyboard
This may sound silly and trivial but seriously, how does anyone use the iOS keyboard? I love swipe-to-type.  Seriously.  Totally has changed my usage patterns on my phone.  If you are stuck in the stone age and are still tapping away at your phone, you seriously need to start looking for alternatives.

Conclusion
So I’ve now been about 3 weeks into the switch and can honestly say, I don’t miss the iPhone at all.  I’m genuinely happier with my Nexus 5.  I wouldn’t call it life changing like when I first got a smartphone but that’s probably a good thing.  I feel my Nexus 5, for the way I use it, is every bit as functional as the equivalent iPhone.  And that’s going to be a huge problem for Apple.   Apple’s business model doesn’t work if it is about the same as its competitors and it's becoming pretty clear to me that this is what it is coming to.   Do I still think in some cases the iPhone is better?  Sure.  Do I really think it is better at almost twice the price?  Nope, not even close.

Any other iOS users contemplating a switch?  What’s holding you back?  What do you think this market looks like 5 years from now?
