Bison back in Banff after over 130 years. Coinciding with our 150th year, 16 bison -- 10 pregnant cows and 6 young bulls -- were transported to Banff National Park's remote Panther Valley yesterday (Feb.6th). The last wild bison were gone before the region was established as Canada's first national park in 1885. The small herd was blessed with a First Nations ceremony before being transported as far in toward their new home as roads would allow then individually airlifted in modified shipping containers the rest of the way. Hopes are that the group will double in numbers by the summer of 2018, by which time they'll be turned out to roam free beyond their temporary observation paddock.

This is not intended as a tourist attraction, but if people wish to spend two days hiking from the nearest road in to where the bison are, they're welcome to! 😆

First four photos below courtesy of CBC.
1. Bison 'hit the road' after release.
2. Transport trucks' caravan.
3. Helicopter airlift touching down.
4. Alternate photo angle of bison release from specialized containers into scenic Panther Valley. Note the abnormal horn appearance: this is due to protective rubber hosing slipped onto the horns during the relocation exercise.
