We need to consider what's good for society as a whole, always keep that in mind. Part of what we need to do is have a job for everyone who wants one. In addition to keeping up our infrastructure, it makes sense to make investments in arts, music, history, education, experimentation. These investments will pay huge dividends, so it makes sense to make them collectively (i.e. through taxes). There should be no such thing as getting a degree in something worthless. If your passion is ancient literature, and you are willing to work hard at it, then society should provide for you. The capitalist model completely fails at this and it's to our detriment.

This extension: http://huyz.us/google-plus-me/ is really essentially for G+ especially if you follow people like +Guy Kawasaki who post a lot of stuff. It actually makes it usable. But you will also have to make sure you remove this extension: https://chrome.google.com/webstore/detail/mnhiknfpdlpmmgmecadnffgmgpgaldlo as they are not compatible and the former is encompasses the same functionality.
G+me: collapse the Google+ stream into a real-time dashboard. G+me is a Google Chrome browser extension that enhances the Google+ web app to unlock the potential of its real-time updates and make it m...

This may seem obvious and trivial, but I have discovered that the best way for me to solve work problems is to write about them (as opposed to try and think them through in my head -- my conscious mind lacks the capacity for that). This partly dawned on me years ago when I was writing resolutions in bug reports that I was done with I would see new things that needed to be taken care of.

Well I used to do all of my writing long hand in an engineering notebook and just yesterday I decided to move to writing using the computer (my handwriting has atrophied from lack of use). So now I just write my thoughts in comments on in my bug reports. Not only is this effective in helping to see new things about solving my problems, it provides a very complete record of the decisions that went into resolving an issue.

I have also used mind mapping to great effect at work. Solutions present themselves...

The real problem with our country is we don't have a good singable national anthem. This is how it's done: http://youtu.be/1BItSoe-FyQ

Just back from watching a performance of Pirates of Penzance with my amazingly talented son, +Francis Upton V. In this today's final show he played the role of Samuel for which he was the understudy. He and the cast did a fantastic job. I'm so fortunate.

a modern Major General of course (but I'm really not that smart). I think I'm really the model of a modern computer programmer. Though they don't even call them that any more.

Just watched Star Wars: A New Hope on DVD. Only the second time I watched it since the theatrical release in 1977. It holds up pretty well. One thing that was pretty amazing was how beat up everything looked on the DVD version. When watching it in the theater, most things (e.g. the driods) looks pretty shiny and new. It sort of reminds me of watching Citizen Cain, where the movie was really a breakthrough it how it was shot back then, but is nothing special now. It's the same with the special effects of Star Wars. Our 5 year old loved it. One thing that was interesting was the accents. Even Princess Leia seemed to drift in and out of an English accent (Carrie Fisher pointed this out in one of her recent shows).
