This year marks the 40th anniversary of the Third Wave and the 10th anniversary of Georgetown's Center for Democracy and Civil Society (CDACS). Yet today democracy is challenged on all fronts, from the aftermath of the Arab Spring to mass protests in Ukraine and Venezuela. What have we learned about democracy and democracy promotion during the past 40 years, and what new lessons have recent events taught us?

Join us for an expert panel discussion on the current state of democracy and democracy studies with Thomas Carothers (Carnegie Endowment for International Peace), Steven Heydemann (USIP), and Sharon Wolchik (George Washington University).
