The data we store on digital media doesn't last as long as we think. Here's my blog post explaining why we spent two days liberating the Apple II Prince of Persia source code from 22-year-old floppies -- and why we should all be aware that our own digital archives are vulnerable in ways that paper and film aren't.

When I was 20, I got this letter from a 17-year-old aspiring game designer in England. His name was John Romero and he would go on to make Doom and Quake.

Let's see what those guys can do... And if they succeed, let's see what you could do in a Apple II ;) I am very sure the Freeprince team (that I am part of) will go nuts reading this.

Jordan, when Richard Walker and I made a version of POP on the Sega Genesis/Megadrive at Domark Software in 1994ish we had the source code to one version, mailed on a floppy disk if I recall. Richard made the call to write our version from scratch in 68000 but the source was useful as reference. However I believe the source we had access to was in C; do you know what that version would have been?

Awesome! Sad to say I've never played Karateka, but I played the heck out of the original Prince of Persia back in the day. I'll definitely be giving the reboot my attention when it arrives.
