Goddess Hoi or Ahoi, Painted on Kite paper with vegetable colours, Kumaun Hills, Uttaranchal; 19th Century. A week before Diwali, festival of lights celebrated in October-November every year. The Housewives paint such images of the Goddess of well being of their offspring. This tradition prevails all over north India, up to Bihar, where the goddess is addressed mud wall paintings, floor decorations, clay toys and pottery and such like artifacts are the prerogatives of housewives who observe fasts and pray for their families' well-being. These craft traditions, like embroideries, have been nurtured by women all over India.
