Indeed, poetic imagination is the last way left in which to challenge and conflict the dominant reality. The dominant reality is necessarily in prose, but to create such poetry and lyrical thought requires more than skill in making rhymes.

Jeremiah and second Isaiah together, poets of pathos and amazement, speak in laments and doxologies. They cannot be torn from each other. Reading Jeremiah alone these faith in death where God finally will not stay. And reading second Isaiah alone leads us to imagine that we may receive comfort without tears and tearing. Clearly, only those who anguish will sing new songs. Without anguish the new song is likely to be strident and just more royal fakery.

I used to think it curious that, when having to quote scripture on demand, someone would inevitably say, "Jesus wept. " It is usually done as gimmick to avoid having to quote a longer passage. But now I understand the depth of that verse. Jesus knew what we know ones must always learn again: (a) that weeping must be real because endings are real; and (b) that weeping permits newness. His weeping permits the kingdom to come. Such weeping is a radical criticism, a fearful dismantling because it means the end of all machismo; weeping is something kings rarely do without losing their thrones. Yet the loss of thrones is precisely what is called for in radical criticism.

The newness from God is the only serious source of energy. And that energy for which people yearn is precisely what the royal consciousness--either of Solomon or Nebuchadnezzar --cannot give.

Thanks for posting Chris. After reading the above, listening to the poem, and then reading the article, I am convinced that I must be even more vigilant in my descernment skills. My first reaction to the poem was, "Wow! Nice Job by that young man. And his theology was pretty good." - Then I read the article. - It never ceases to amaze me how just a little leaven leavens the whole loaf. I think that the poet was on the right path, and that he was genuine in his attempt to address the issue of hypocracy in religion; but, after reading the article I can see how the way he worded it sets the stage for others to believe that all religion is bad and thereby having the opposing affect.

Subtlety is afterall the enemy's forte.

Once again, Thanks for posting Chris. And thanks for the link to the article Mike.
