Facebook Ordered to Stop Collecting Data on WhatsApp Users in Germany

[...] data protection commissioner ordered Facebook on Tuesday to stop collecting and storing data on WhatsApp users in Germany, the first time a privacy watchdog has waded into the debate. The regulator, which has authority over Facebook’s activities across Germany, also called on the social network to delete all information already forwarded from WhatsApp on roughly 35 million German users.

Another Beautiful Hand-Painted Wood Ceiling

There's a fantastic, hand-painted floral pattern popping out of the ceiling in my living room.

Jordan writer in blasphemy case Nahid Hattar killed

A Jordanian writer charged with offending Islam after allegedly sharing a satirical cartoon on his Facebook page has been killed.

Not a good precedent. We should be allowed to ask questions and scrutinize things. Political theories, economic theories, religious doctrine, Linux distribution, etc...

Good. WhatsApp and Facebook are super shady and need to be kept in check.

Islam and the Misuses of Ecstasy

Islam marries religious ecstasy, sectarian hatred, and a triumphalist expectation of world conquest in a way that other religions do not.

I have long struggled to understand how smart, well-educated liberals can fail to perceive the unique dangers of Islam. In The End of Faith, I argued that such people don’t know what it’s like to really believe in God or Paradise—and…

I don't know where he gets this stuff—it's amazing.

Balkan aspirations - this map from 1914 illustrates the territorial ambitions of 4 nations: Bulgarians, Greeks, Romanians and Serbs. The Serbs and Romanians mostly got what they wanted, as did Greece except for Cyprus and Istanbul. The big losers here are the Ottomans and Austro-Hungarians, which makes perfect sense since they lost the war too. Though in all fairness , Romania lost as well , it's just that we went to War with Hungary in 1918 and occupied Budapest. So that was that :)
But fun fact ,if you look at the map , the whole Serbia-Servia mix-up came from the fact that the name used in the west came through the modern Greek language that pronounces Beta as V. This also happened with Spanish demonyms and toponyms as the Spaniards pronounce V and B very similarly (the Argentinians exactly the same) , hence Cordova/Cordoba , Havana/Habana.
Hell , come to think about it half of Europe still pronounces Romania as a variant of Rumenia : Rumunia , Roemenië , rumensk , rumener etc. So many languages retained the "u", while a few of them adopted the modernized spelling (English, Portuguese, Italian, Catalan, Hungarian and a few others).
