If you're riding in the Singlespeed Cyclocross World Championships this year, you'd better ride hard, coz there might be a brand new 53mpb tee waiting for you at the finish line. We're downright thrilled to be sponsoring this year's exercise in mustachery and badassery right here in our fair home city.

We believe in defending the right of cyclists to use the road. If you do, too, sign this petition.
Jym Dyer originally shared:

Tell the Senate that bikes have a right to the road

The draft of the Senate's transportation authorization bill, S. 1813 Moving Ahead for Progress in the 21st Century Act, includes language that would introduce a mandatory sidepath law on roads in our National Parks and other Federal lands. It requires cyclists on Federal lands to use a path or trail, instead of roads, if the speed limit is over 30 MPH and a trail exists within 100 yards, regardless of its condition or utility of the path. The provision sets a terrible precedent. Passing it would send the wrong message to transportation agencies that these policies are acceptable. Laws like this have been taken off the books in states over the past 30 years. This takes us in the wrong direction.

Day one of the SF Bicycle Expo was a total success! Met lots of great people, hung out with friends old and new, and sold a boatload of ZPG swag. Tomorrow we're doing it all over again, so if you're in the area make your way out to Expo and visit me by mid-afternoon. :)

There's no getting around the best way to get around.
Introduction
There's no getting around the best way to get around. Biking is fun, and quiet, and cool. It's practical. It's also fast, simple, and pretty easy. It's social. It's enlivening. It's freeing. It's heroic.
It's also healthy, and fatties that we Americans are, we could all use more exercise. (Does driving to the gym to run on a treadmill really seem like progress?)

Biking is far cheaper than driving a car, too. According to the Department of Labor, we Americans spend 18 percent of our income on our cars (if you include maintenance, insurance, and gas). That's more than we spend on healthcare, which is pretty scary, considering how fat and unhealthy we are. Maybe that's because we drive so much...And, yet, behind all of that fat, the real costs of driving are hidden. Gas is heavily subsidized, so the price you pay at the pump doesn't reflect its true cost (reasonably estimated at $10/gallon).

Perhaps best of all, biking is politically and environmentally tenable. The bicycle lobby isn't tangled up with oil-exporting nations, or over-eager to drill the hell out of our last great wilderness. Bikes don't clog up public spaces in cities, and they don't spit out pollutants that create acid rain, smoggy air, and global climate change.

The car age is ending, and it's about time; few other technological advances impose so many burdens.

ZPG, then, has become one way to make this point: Biking costs less for us, for our cities, for the planet. Go ride a bike - and spread the word...
