Libraries are a remarkable resource for aspiring authors.
Everyone has a book in them, it’s said. While Christopher Hitchens completed that phrase with “in most cases that’s where it should stay,” it doesn’t seem the public agrees. This is dramatically demonstrated by the expansion of U.S. publishing, as measured by Bowker, the U.S. issuer of ISBNs, the numbers that help track book sales. In 2002, Bowker issued 247,777. In 2012 (the most recent figures available), demand rose to 2,352,797—an increase of...

A prominent online presence can help your library succeed.
In Library: An Unquiet History, historian and curatorial fellow for Harvard’s metaLAB Matthew Battles describes Melvil Dewey’s impatience with inefficiency in library work in the 1870s. “To Dewey, local interests and special needs were less important than the efficient movement of books into the hands of readers,” he writes. That crisp statement of purpose should be an inspiration to the current discussions around making library collections and p...

This library wanted Pokemon Go to go away.
Pokemon Go has had any number of positive side effects since it was introduced, including exposing couch-dwellers to sunlight and fresh air, and encouraging strangers to interact at Gyms and Pokestops. It's been called a boon to businesses and any where else that players congregate, but one public library has found the mobile game to be more of a hassle than a blessing. The Provo City Library announced on its blog on Thursday that it had asked Ni...

Premiere automation and cataloging solutions for libraries
Introduction
The Library Corporation – a family-owned, GSA-certified company founded in 1974 – creates and distributes automation and cataloging software to library systems worldwide.  TLC’s suite of next-generation LS2 products adds Web-based, touchscreen-enabled functionality to its three integrated library systems: Library•Solution for small to medium public, academic, and special libraries; Library•Solution for Schools for public and private school libraries; and CARL•X for large public libraries.  TLC's BiblioFile and eBiblioFile provide robust, customized MARC records for traditional and digital downloads.  The company also offers an online hosted solution so that libraries and districts can access their automation systems and cataloging databases from any computer workstation with Internet access. TLC serves its customers from offices in Inwood, W.Va., Denver, Singapore, and Ontario, Canada.
