It’s been 168 years since the California Gold Rush.
Now, after the passing of Proposition 64 that legalized recreational use of #marijuana, the state may seen a “green rush,” where investors try to take advantage of a nascent #cannabis industry soon to be worth about $4 billion or even $7 billion by some estimates.
“It’s a lot like the dot com industry as well as the telecom revolution,” said Scott Jordan, director of #businessdevelopment at Dynamic Alternative Finance, a company based in the Denver area that has arranged $27 million in loans and equipment leases for cannabis #business owners in the past two years.

With the increasing number of states allowing the use of #marijuana -- medically and recreationally -- the allure of #marijuana #stocks is understandable. It's a lot easier to make money in growing industries.
But before #investors buy marijuana stocks, they should know what they're getting themselves into.
Many marijuana stocks, like #MedicalMarijuana Inc., are penny #stocks that trade over the counter rather than on one of the major exchanges. It can be dangerous buying penny stocks and that goes double for an industry where the federal government still hasn't legalized it.

#Medical Marijuana is legal in twenty-eight states. Wait, what?
Yes, more than half the population of the United States live in a place where they can #legally use cannabis for #medical purposes. The industry is developing rapidly, refining its growing and processing technologies, creating new products and building expertise among employees. And as regulation increases (product testing, child-safe containers, accurate labeling, etc.) the supply of #cannabis has become safer. Dispensaries are moving beyond the random supplier who shows up with the big baggie at the back door to tax-paying product-testing sources of #cannabis.

With #Canada set to make history this week by tabling legislation to make the nation the first G-7 country to legalize #cannabis for adult use, many #investors are focusing on the market. 33 companies hold 41 licenses issued by Health Canada under ACMPR to cultivate or sell cannabis, and 11 of these trade publicly on either the CSE, the TSX Venture or the TSX, with several others prepared to begin trading this month.
Each of these #stocks can be bought by anyone who has an account that permits the purchase of Canadian securities. For U.S. investors, 8 of the 11 stocks are actually traded on the OTC, with the other three having unsponsored ADR trading tickers. In all cases, several brokers will allow U.S. investors to trade the U.S. equivalents, meaning that one can invest in the sector without actually having an account that permits non-U.S. stocks.
