Gimbal or Cardan suspension

A gimbal is a pivoted support that allows the rotation of an object about a single axis. A set of three gimbals, one mounted on the other with orthogonal pivot axes, may be used to allow an object mounted on the innermost gimbal to remain independent of the rotation of its support.
Gimbal is sometimes called a Cardan suspension after Italian mathematician and physicist Gerolamo Cardano (1501–1576) described it in detail in his work De rerum subtilitate. However, Cardano did not invent the gimbal, nor did he claim to. The device has been known since antiquity and may not have a single identifiable inventor.
Anyway the gimbal was first described by the Greek inventor Philo of Byzantium (280–220 BC).

Let us think of the Sixteenth century, historic age in which he lived Girolamo Cardano. At that time, often the powerful men were transported with vehicles that made to feel them every bump, every pothole and every inclination of the way. Cardano realized, and made to built by a mechanic of Cremona for the Emperor Charles V, Sedes Mitra or the marvelous seat in order that, while he was transported, he remained motionless and sitting comfortably in any place he stopped.
Cardano explained that if you have three steel rings so that they can move up and down around the poles and forward and back, left and right, therefore the Emperor was still standing in the carriage, anyhow it moved.
The system was of great use in compasses that were mounted on gimbals (such uses were already known in the fourteenth century for maritime practice). The actual compass is hinged in a brass ring and can turn.

Furthemore, if a gyroscope is mounted on a gimbal, that allows the wheel to navigate freely in the three directions of space, its axis will remain oriented in the same direction even if the support  changes the orientation.
