Earlier this year, economic historian Robert Higgs of the Independent Institute presented a paper challenging the worth of Gross Domestic Product (GDP) as a measure of the economic welfare of a nation's people. In the following excerpt, he gets straight to the heart of the matter in discussing ...

Now we are talking a bit more and posturing a bit less. Thanks.

I still think the kid was clearly breaking the law, I also agree the officers mishandled the situation. Ontop of that 911/dispatch also where in the wrong.

With at least three separate parties in the wrong it is sad and wrong that only one faced any real consequences.

But to falsely exonerate one party, ignore another, and falsely exaggerate one groups share of the guilt does not help the conversation.

We need to look at everything that happened and put checks in place to minimize all of the mistakes that led to the tradegy. Including 911 passing all relevant data to the officers sent to the scene, teaching kids not to brandish firearms especially realistic ones, and changing police procedure to minimize and punish trigger happy cops.

I am sure you will see the officers share of the guilt as the largest and most important. And I will continue to see a more shared blame, multiple compounded mistakes putting everyone at the scene in a bad situation.

BTW it was an airsoft gun that came from the store with an orange tip. Dunno if you have ever handled them.

I have dealt with police multiple times while in position of bb guns or airsift guns and declared them prior to reaching for them or opening my glovebox/trunk where they where.

The officer was never in a position to misconstrue the threat or given cause to over react... Because I don't like being shot.
I teach my children not to point toy guns at people because I don't want them suspended over a poptart or something.
Officers need punished, 911/dispatch needs to preform their job properly. And parents need to teach their kids how to act, people need to not be dumb.
