If you were going about it objectively hand guns would be banned first.
I think the knife comparison only largely works for hunting weapons. They are being improvised to kill people not made and acquired for that purpose.

If people know they are more likely to use the weapon in self harm or harm of those close to them than defense I consider them sufficiently informed.

I acknowledge risk of unopposed government force.
