The Very Best, a band fronted by Malawian Esau Mwanyama, is currently on tour in the US. Tickets are still available for a number of their shows (folks in Madison and Chicago, I’m looking at you!). I’ve always been a big fan of their work, but now that I know the meaning behind their new album MTMTMK, I couldn’t help but share it with all of haba na haba’s readers. Listen to Johan Karlberg and Esau Mwanyama talk about MTMTMK: So, MTMTMK = More T...

rumors Malawi President Bingu wa Mutharika has died. Others say he is in critical condition following cardiac arrest. I believe the former. In either case, we need to think about what the future has in store for Malawi.
With the rumors still unclear on Malawi President Bingu wa Mutharika’s health/death and not a word coming from the Malawi government, one thing remains clear: in Mutharika’s incapacity ...

The highly anticipated new blog by Daron Acemoglu and James Robinson has an interesting new post on extractive institutions in Africa. It’s worth a read. Also worth a read are Kim Yi Dionne‘s reactions. I don’t know if there are two “sides” to this debate, and if so, which “side” I would take. But there are two things that incline me to take Kim’s critical discussion more seriously than that of A&R. First, her relationship with her field research...

Today, the Caine Prize announced its shortlist for the 2012 Caine Prize for African Writing. All of the stories are featured on the Caine Prize web site. I took particular interest in the story by Stanley Kenani, not just because he’s a Malawian and the story is set in Malawi, but because its central story is about homosexuality: ‘This,’ Charles explained in his deep voice, ‘is my natural orientation. I have never felt sexually attracted to any w...

Today’s Malawi Voice featured an article written by a young man visiting his family in rural Rumphi, in northern Malawi. He writes about the perceptions of his kin on the death of former President Bingu wa Mutharika. Though much of what we hear here in the West is about how bad Mutharika was (at least since re-election in 2009) and how many in Malawi are not sad to see him gone, this story paints a different picture of people in a rural village s...

UPDATE: Since this post was written at 3:30am CST (Texas time), there has been a major development. Just now (10:30am CST-Texas time), Joyce Banda finished a brief speech given after her official swearing in as President of Malawi. It is now official: Joyce Banda is the President. The original post is below. ****************************** Joyce Banda, photo taken in 2011 by Travis Lupick, shared from Flickr.com with cc license Joyce Banda address...
