Length of FFVII Remake Installments Will Be "Full Scale"

Game Informer's May cover story is about Final Fantasy XV, but as it happens, there's some Final Fantasy VII Remake news in there as well. Referencing that issue, GameSpot reports that each episode of the Remake will be a full-length installment. The Final Fantasy XIII trilogy in particular is being looked to as a model for the Remake's structure.

According to Yoshinori Kitase, "It will essentially be a full scale game for each part of the multi-part series. In XIII, each instalment told the story from a different angle. It was kind of like approaching an unknown territory in a sense." And: "Whereas with Final Fantasy VII Remake, we already have a preexisting story, so it wouldn't really make sense if that isn't encompassed in a multi-part series... So if we're just looking at each of these parts, one part should be on par with the scale of one Final Fantasy XIII game."

What is still unknown at this time is how many parts the Remake will encompass, and how much new material—for example, quests that could tie into the Compilation's additions to the canon—will be present. Some fans have speculated that each of the original game's three disks will be an installment, but keep in mind that Disk Three is mostly just brief sidequests, the final battle, and the ending. As always, we'll keep you posted.

Cloud to Join the Super Smash Bros. Roster

The surprise announcement at the end of today's Nintendo Direct broadcast was something special indeed: Cloud Strife is coming to Super Smash Bros. for 3DS/WiiU. The trailer included scenes of Cloud, in both his original game and Advent Children outfits, fighting the likes of Mario, Kirby, Pit, and Sonic, and also showed off a Midgar-themed stage filled with summons, and Omnislash repurposed into what we presume is a Final Smash attack.

There is not yet a release date for this DLC (nor any word on whether or not Cloud will get an amiibo figure), but as usual, we will keep you all posted.

"Dramatic Changes" to Battle System Planned for FFVII Remake

Today, GamesRadar reported on an interview with Tetsuya Nomura in Official PlayStation Magazine which included a few tidbits about the remake. For one thing, Nomura says to expect "dramatic changes" to the battle system, though it will still be "recognizable".

It's unclear as to whether this means the remake will have an action RPG-styled system, or will remain turn-based. However, it's worth noting that Nomura has had great success with the action RPG systems in the Kingdom Hearts games, and also that the main Final Fantasy series has been shying away from turn-based gameplay for years now.

Another excerpt from the interview mentioned Advent Children. Nomura and his team will be referring to the ten-year-old (!!!) movie for inspiration, but do not plan on recycling the movie's 3D models due to the tech used and their age.

Final Fantasy Explorers Set for Western Release

The 3DS exclusive Final Fantasy Explorers, Square Enix's take on Monster Hunter, has been confirmed to be releasing in the Americas on January 26, 2016, according to an official press release. In addition, Eurogamer reports that it will come out in Europe only three days later, on January 29th. It was originally released in Japan on December 18, 2014 and earned a score of 32 out of 40 points from Famitsu.

Much like Monster Hunter, Final Fantasy Explorers has a heavy focus on co-op multiplayer. The story concerns the hunt for crystals, and gameplay features summons and what sounds like a robust job system. Why this game is being mentioned on the Citadel is because of the Trance ability, which allows players to turn into characters from other Final Fantasy games. Check out these screenshots for Cloud and Sephiroth's appearances.

Kotaku spoke to Adam Boyes, PlayStation's head of third-party developer relations, about keeping some of this past E3's biggest reveals secret. Apparently, Sony has known about the remake for about a year now.

The remake is described as being a "partnership" with Square Enix, though it's unclear as to whether this entails Sony helping to fund its development. Also, the length of time that the remake will be exclusive to the PS4 will be disclosed sometime before its release, though what other platforms the remake will appear on have not yet been confirmed.

Square Enix's Tetsuya Nomura talked to various gaming press organizations yesterday about the projects he's been working on, including the FFVII remake. What follows after the cut is a collection of the most interesting bits from these interviews, from at least four different outlets.

This is a long post, so buckle up and read on...

We've received the first press assets for the tentatively titled "Final Fantasy VII Remake".
There is not much new information in the official press release, save for the confirmation of three key members of the original FFVII staff's involvement in this new project (Yoshinori Kitase producing, Kasushige Nojima on scenario, and Tetsuya Nomura directing), plus a link to the official site (http://ffvii-remake.square-enix.com/). However, there is an interesting tidbit in the copyright notice at the end: both Tetsuya Nomura and Roberto Ferrari (The Last Remnant, Song Summoner, Final Fantasy XV) are credited with the character designs.

Looks like Sony and Square Enix are going to be keeping us busy here at the Citadel for the next year or so: the long-rumored remake of Final Fantasy VII is happening, and will initially be exclusive to PS4. Announced just moments ago at Sony's E3 press conference, the short teaser trailer featured glimpses of Midgar (including "South Edge" as a train stop… hmm…) and familiar touches such as Barret's gun-arm and Cloud's Buster Sword.

Of course, we will keep you all posted on the latest details. In the meantime, come discuss this planet-shattering news in the forums!
