Sorry, but I don't think Russia, China, Tajikistan, and Uzbekistan has the international public's best interest in mind when they draw up a document that commits its adherents to "[curb] the dissemination of information that incites terrorism, secession-ism, or extremism, or that undermines other countries' political, economic, and social stability, as well as their spiritual and cultural environment."

Heh.

I like how Engadget awkwardly refuses to say, "we're doing a magazine."

Huh, I didn't realize that cold water was so controversial.

I've been washing in cold water for years - mostly because I'm pretty bad at washing clothes and when I wash in cold water I tend to ruin less of them - but also it didn't seem like warm water got them any cleaner and it seemed like a waste of energy.
The modest sales of cold-water laundry detergents suggest that skeptical consumers are more concerned about getting the clothes clean than being green.

Saw Contagion tonight. A few thoughts (some of which might actually be related to the movie):

It was the first time I saw the Girl With The Dragon Tattoo trailer in the theater. Whoever cut that trailer is going to win something, for sure. Extremely effective.

I really wanted to hate the Digital 4K projection at Atlantic Station, but I didn't. I thought the image was ever-so-slightly darker, but not a deal-breaker. A couple of times the image had a video-like quality to it, but it wasn't to the point of being distracting and may have been more due to the source material (it was shot on RED).

It was really cool to see scenes at the CDC set in places where I've been.

I noticed that they mispronounced epidemiologist, but would have never noticed it had my public health friends hadn't pointed it out.

Speaking of, this movie seems to be laser targeted at the national-level public health field: from power struggles with local health departments to the villain being a vaccine skeptic.

The movie itself: kind of boring. Because it had to keep a global(ish) focus it couldn't stay on one person very long, leaving us unable to fully explore any single character and even though the movie has a full 1 hour 45 minute run-time, it felt rushed. I found myself wishing that it were a book so I could explore the individual stories a bit more.

Lastly, Demetri Martin as a scientist. Heh.

Usually avoid posting quotes and I was rather indifferent to the speaker, but here it is nonetheless:

"Life can be much broader once you discover one simple fact, and that is, everything around you that you call life was made up by people that were no smarter than you ... the minute that you understand that you can poke life ... that you can change it, you can mould it ... that's maybe the most important thing."

Watched Midnight in Paris tonight. Liked it. Very Woody Allen. Felt smart when I laughed at the surrealist joke. Also, may have gasped audibly when I realized Gad Elmaleh has a small role.
