Yaya center continue to be a landmark commercial centre within the Nairobi urban map. My review is based on the recent modification / add-on multilevel parking and associated security system installation. Parking lot got too congested and maneuvering car inside is a difficult task and too many criss cross driveways with up & downs will be a troublesome task for the Ist time entry. My most terrifying experience is the introduction of Entry / Exit Gate controls added with new set of Bollards. Couple of points comes to my mind (was a security system engineer some time in my career). 1. Security systems are installed with the perceived security threat (This improvement here was the fall out of West Gate Episode / other recent terrorism related troubles including in lamu). 2. Usage of combination of system - Boom Barrier and Bollards (Not a bad Idea, but need a close look on its expected usage and appropriate operational strategy, especially when two different systems, they need to work together in an integrated manner). 3. Since the premises are to be secured, it will be the Entry which is more focused (Here, both Entry & Exits have Bollards in addition to Boom Gate; may be nobody should run away with the KES 50 / 100, damaging own car by the boom barrier!!!!- Less likely. Secondly, future or any time altering Exit as Entry and save the trouble of road breaking / re-installation? or an external threat in this case a terrorist vehicle can take an Entry from this route, force breaking the barriers?). 4. Though it may justify the need of a stricter security, the basics of Security System design is a complete flaw... - Why? - At the Exit Check Point - will be stopping the car for authorization. - Two systems in operation independent based on your pre-paid parking ticket. - Both systems operate independent - a. Boom barrier - goes up - which you can see from the Windshield (Easily recognizable and is in regular use across the city). b. A Single Bollard beam at the middle of the Road - from the Car you can't see this, a Red / Green light installed at the RHD, which also will be most likely partially covered by the Car Corner beam between the Windshield & Window / Door Frame. c. As you authorize your ticket, only moving part in your front which you notice will be the Boom Gate (and ofcourse - most likely you will be taking the car front). d. The most troublesome part is, once you authorize, the Bollard also retracts to underground and once complete, the Red light on the side will go OFF and Green will come ON. e. Now the catch is - Bollard operation is slow and if you are not lucky, you would have already moved the car, which could have banged on to the Bollard which was in process of operation - but incomplete. (You would have left with a damaged bumper!!!!). f. The way it should have been to make the system work as a single integrated system (Not to work independent), and based on the objective the developer would have thought, the strategy &/ mode may vary. f. Now, you must be knowing - I was not a lucky guy!!! The solution is good, but poorly conceived and implemented as an integrated solution, & I am available for a free assistance so that nobody else will be unlucky as me, atleast on this part!!! Tks...

YaYa Centre has been one of my favourite places for business meetings in Nairobi for the past several years. However, I was chagrined to learn when I visited today that YaYa Centre's management has turned the place into a veritable prison. They have emplaced metal detectors at the main entrances and the guards operating them require the customers to empty their pockets to put their valuables in a plastic tray before passing through the metal detector (during which you cannot keep your eyes on the tray with your belongings). Adding insult to injury the guards then insist on opening my bag and putting their hands inside it. The experience reminded me of what Kenya must have been like during the colonial period when native Kenyans were not allowed to enter white-only towns, except if they were searched first. The new security policy places my own personal security over my belongings at risk, and adds nothing to the safety of mall patrons. Having had two phones stolen since I moved to Nairobi, it seems to me that YaYa's new policy only increases the INSECURITY of its patrons. I for one, shall not shop there again until they return to a sane policy and get rid of those repulsive machines.

Great variety of shops and restaurants plus excellent centre for small children to play, while you shop. Look out for KikoRomeo - a top Afrocentric fashion brand; Little Red for international luxury fashion brands; Bookstop, which will find any book on the planet; Sierra Brasserie with excellent food & micro brewery.
