Algarve - This castle is a grand estate, which has been totally renovated, whilst protecting its heritage and traditional features. With total privacy for the owners it is still just a short drive to all major towns and to the international airport of Faro. Glorious sandy beaches and many of the top golf courses are within easy reach.
Originally an 18th century Portuguese farm estate the property has, over the last two decades, been transformed into a grand “Tuscan” villa, set in a large diverse garden. What was once a prosperous Quinta of a wealthy Portuguese nobleman is now an impressive, completely refurbished and renovated, estate – creating an appropriate setting for an extensive collection of antique and classical sculptures, columns and murals.
Although an Italian flavour is obvious throughout the property, its Portuguese origins have not been neglected. The large external windows are barred in the traditional manner and the house contains large Portuguese fireplaces. A number of built-in garden benches are made of antique “azulejos”, Portuguese decorative tiles. The marriage of styles has successfully created this most tasteful, private and peaceful retreat.
The castle is accessed through iron gates (remote controlled and automatically operated), up a cobbled drive, which is flanked by tall cypresses and large antique pots. The drive takes you through the 3.000m2 front garden, mainly laid to lawn, with an ornamental fountain. The area beyond the gate, the courtyard, offers ample parking space for many cars. Wrought iron gates are passed and several inner courtyards offer the access to the main house.
