Basic Information
I've taken lessons from Mike for years. I started out doing an hour a week and it just wasn't enough time, the lessons were so good, so I upped it to two hours a week. I've had a lot of teachers over the years and here's what Mike offers that makes him an ideal choice for an instructor: - Mike's extremely patient, versatile, and friendly. I'll say I want to work on something (say, a song from a band I like) and Mike will make sure that the approach we take takes the lesson above and beyond just learning the song. It might be theory, developing chord melody techniques, or something else. - Mike knows theory inside and out. Not only has he been playing from a young age, he trained at the Berklee College of Music in Boston and has been teaching for years. He's seen all kinds of students and knows how to communicate the complexities of theory tailored to you, whatever your background or age. - Mike's record collection!!!!! The importance of this collection can't be underestimated. Sometimes my lessons are half technique and half music history lesson. The collection is astounding: if you want to learn not only how to play but also how everything fits together, you can learn it from Mike and his collection. I thought I knew something about music, but I could spend years digging through these records with Mike (and have!) and only scratch the surface. - Mike's experience playing in bands and composing. Mike played with the electronic/industrial band Meat Beat Manifesto as well other bands in a wide variety of styles. He knows the major software for composing (Logic, ProTools, and others) and this brings a unique approach to his teaching. If you're looking for a guitar teacher in San Francisco, definitely drop him a line!
