It's the middle of September, and we are all knee deep in fall and year-end fundraising planning. So much so that on the first attempt to gather tips from a mixed array of our highly qualified staff, all I heard were crickets. After a second ask – more crickets.

Finally, after an urgent last-chance reminder, I was able to increase my response rate exponentially! Here are the gifts they donated to this newsletter:

Social media changes quickly, so we’ve compiled some statistics from 2012 about where your donors are on the internet and how you should reach out to them.

Have you read our white paper “The Lifetime Donor Conversation?” If so, what do you think of this excerpt:
Every time you contact a donor, that donor responds by telling you something. It may be that they are ready to give more, as in the example above. It may be that they are happy with your current relationship. It may be that they feel the need to economize or that they have become disenchanted with your cause. You can’t know for certain what a donor is trying to tell you with a particular response, but if you make no effort to figure it out, you can miss opportunities or undermine the relationship.
How do YOU measure and respond to your donors?

Long-term, loyal donors don’t become lifetime donors just from having a deep interest in your organization. They have to know that your organization has a deep interest in them. This is beyond the basic practices of thank-you mailings and welcome packages. A lifelong donor is a relationship, and anyone who’s ever had one can tell you relationships don’t grow, they don’t even live long, without communication. If you want a lifelong donor download our white paper “The Lifetime Donor Conversation” and keep reading!

In preparing our white paper “Donor Stewardship: Making Virtual Friends for Life” Amergent analyzed millions of gifts to dozens to nonprofit organizations and has discovered consistently improved results from effective multi-channel stewardship. We found that donors who make a second gift in their first year are twice as likely to make a gift in their second year.  Have you read this white paper? What are your thoughts on the findings? Please share!

In our review of the online gifts given to a particular charity in 2010, all were made by people who visited their web site. However, only 64% of those gifts were made via the web form.  To find out where the rest came from, download our white paper “Donor Stewardship: Making Virtual Friends for Life”

Developing donors into longtime supporters is the goal. Not only do these donors renew at higher rates – and also give you more gifts each year – but they are more likely to increase their levels of support, like capital campaigns and planned giving. Analytics can help build your population of long-term donors each year. To read how, download our white paper: “Using Analytics to Grow Your Fundraising Program”
