MAJOR ENVIRONMENTAL VICTORY IN CHILE - "Chile’s Committee of Ministers – the country’s highest administrative authority – has cancelled the environmental permits for the five-dam hydropower project, HidroAysén, effectively stopping the scheme that threatened the Baker and Pascua Rivers in Patagonia." -- +International Rivers

This is an issue we've been involved with since 2007 and we couldn't be more thrilled. Check out International Rivers' blog for more on today's announcement: http://www.internationalrivers.org/blogs/331-1 The Baker and Pascua Rivers (seen in the movie 180 South) are running free!

Congratulations to everyone who has worked hard on this victory, especially the Chilean people.

A Pattern Perpetuated by Nature

Today would be Dorothy Hodgkin's 104th birthday. A Nobel Prize winning chemist for her work in determining the atomic structure of insulin, penicillin and vitamin B12 using X-ray crystallography, Dorothy also utilized science as artistic inspiration. From her results, she sketched the arrangement of atoms in an insulin molecule (below), and refused to accept fees nor copyright her work as it was 'a pattern perpetuated by nature'.
