The beginner's class is advertised for someone who has no experience in Spanish, however, the pace moves so quickly and the teacher expects so much and has very little patience for a true beginner. Most of the other students in the beginner class studied Spanish for quite a number of years in High School or college and the teacher moves at their pace. I do not recommend it if you are starting from scratch. If you have studied already for at least a year, then its probably a good place to learn some more.

Great place to learn Spanish if you are serious and ready. I had Vanessa as a teacher and she really pushed me. Highly recommend.

I'm a student of Juan Luis ("Juanlu") in his conversational Spanish class. Excellent professor. He is a natural teacher and he is gifted at quickly evaluating a student's level. Highly recommended.

I took Spanish classes with Dan last year and it was a great experience. I wanted to learn the basics of the language so I could have a foundation to build on. I was also leaving for a month long trip to South America and had a really tight schedule. Dan was a great teacher; Very patient, flexible, and made me feel super comfortable. I feel like it's always awkward to attempt to speak a new language, but Dan really encouraged conversation and I think that made a huge difference in how quickly I picked up the language. Dan provided a lot of structure for me to learn but was very creative in making it fun as well. He brought classic poems and song lyrics for us to read together so it wouldn't be the usual mundane "I went to the train station, etc. etc." I really appreciated the experience and how comfortable I felt with the language at the end of class. I think it made a huge difference to learn with an individual and a native speaker rather than just from books. Overall, highly recommended!

I am now an online student of Dan's after being an in-person one-on-one student of his in NYC (I moved to the west coast this summer). I had taken Spanish in high school, so I was familiar with the grammar and knew some vocabulary, but I could hardly string together two words in a conversation. My lessons with Dan have made all the difference for me in actually speaking the beautiful language! He is an absolutely fantastic teacher! He is extremely patient and encouraging, which has been so important in helping me develop my confidence as a speaker. Also, he's super smart, informed, and has a great sense of humor, so I've managed to improve my fluency and comprehension while also laughing and learning a lot about Spanish culture, history and politics. As far as the transition to being an online student goes, it's actually made meeting with him even more convenient: the video and sound are very clear, synced, and there's no lag (and there's no time spent commuting). Learning a new language is hard, but Dan has really made it easier and more fun than I could have imagined. I highly recommend taking lessons with him!

I can't say enough good things about the Berges Institute. My tutor, Vanessa, is the perfect Spanish teacher. When I started our weekly tutoring sessions back in March, I had some basic knowledge of the language, but once I actually tried using it, I quickly realized that I was really far away from being able to speak. Boy was I wrong: Thanks to Vanessa's patience and her accommodating and flexible teaching structure, I was forming full sentences by the second lesson. Within a month, I was discussing the news of the day with relative ease, and, most importantly, having fun doing it! That's what it's all about: Learning a language and enjoying yourself at the same time. There is simply no other way to do it! And with Vanessa I have finally found the kind of tutor who isn't afraid to put down the stuffy textbook if it gets too boring and just play it by ear. If you've had a negative experience with language learning in the past like I have you know how important that is. Long story short, if you're searching for a Spanish teacher who actually *cares* about your progress and *wants* to help you achieve your goals stop looking -- you've found one.
