Pictures from last week's Mastitis Discussion Meeting kindly hosted at Batstone Farm.
Delaware vet John Walsh spoke about the importance of analysing milk SCC recording data and recording mastitis cases accurately, particularly with a view to using targeted dry cow therapy. We also discussed sampling cows before treatment for bacteriology here at the practice for quick results. Some of the biggest costs involved with mastitis are created from cross infection from chronically sub-clinical and clinically infected cows. Farmers should be looking to achieve a target of less than 10% chronically infected cows in their herd. Research also shows that wearing clean disposable gloves is a crucial, yet simple and cost effective way to help reduce spread of infection.
If you have a mastitis problem, using the Dairy Co Mastitis plan is a useful tool to identify problem areas. Or you could join our new Mastitis control club to help improve SCC and reduce mastitis cases. Contact Sarah Poore at the practice on 01963 350307 for further information.”

Thank you to everyone that came and supported our BVNA event at Yeovil. The event was run to raise awareness of the role of the veterinary nurse, and was run by our two nurses at Yeovil, Jo and Claire. Well done to the winners of our two competitions. The total amount raised was £113, and will be donated the Yeovil branch of the Cats Protection League.
