Even if you root, you should install custom recovery like twrp to make full backups of your phone, just in case something goes wrong. To install custom recovery you need your bootloader unlocked. That will erase everything.

It not bad, just back everything up to your Google account and then restore
Never rooted anything before but if I use towelroot will it wipe everything off my phone?

Supposedly towelroot can root your Nexus without having to unlock the bootloader. Unlocking the bootloader is what erases everything.
