Must-Stop Road Trip Eateries in the U.S.

Americans have long enjoyed a love affair with food and, as a country that is home to people from many different cultures and ethnicities, there’s a wealth of cuisines available at your fingertips. Nothing is off limits, from fast food to gourmet, delis to five-star restaurants, locally-sourced beef to vegan – the food options are endless.

Guy Fieri, restauranteur and host of TV’s “Diners, Drive-ins and Dives,” has shown that one of the best ways to discover delectable eats is to get in your car and drive to a new city. If your next road trip has you traveling near Tucson, Houston, Oklahoma City, Richmond or Jersey City, here are some places you’ll definitely want to check out.
Tucson, Arizona

Forget Phoenix, Tucson is the place for foodies – Thrillist lists Tucson as its top Arizona food city. Here, you’ll find amazing southwestern cuisine, and we recommend two that are very close to Interstate 10.

tucson tamale

Tucson Tamale (2545 E. Broadway Blvd., Tucson, AZ 85716)
This restaurant’s slogan is “unwrap happiness” and their tamales are “hand wrapped with love.” Boasting more than 20 flavors, including vegetarian and vegan options, as well as holiday specials (“Red,” “White” and “Blue” for 4th of July and Thanksgiving-inspired turkey, cranberry, celery and onion, for example), Tucson Tamale prides itself on using organic and GMO-free (genetically modified organisms) ingredients. Plus, Tucson Tamales will ship anywhere in the country if you can’t get there in person.

mi nidito

Mi Nidito Restaurant (1813 S. 4th Ave., Tucson, AZ 85713)
This Mexican restaurant claims it serves the “finest Mexican food” in the Old Pueblo. Established in 1952, this family-run restaurant’s original owners emigrated from Sonora, Mexico. Many famous guests have visited Mi Nidito, including President Clinton, after whom “The President’s Plate” (Bean Tostado, Birria Taco, Chile Relleno, Chicken Enchilada and Beef Tamale) is named. Be aware that this popular spot often has a wait, but it’s well worth it if you are traveling to the Grand Canyon State.
Houston, Texas

The food in Houston is nothing short of fabulous, but there are a couple of eateries that stand above the rest and they’re easily accessible from the Interstate.

underbelly

Underbelly (1100 Westheimer Rd., Houston, TX 77006)
As its name may imply, this upscale eatery and on-site butcher shop is dedicated to supporting local farms and cultural diversity. Underbelly buys its food directly from farmers and the menu features seasonal produce, seafood and freshly butchered items. The menu changes daily, subject to what is available. If you’re feeling a bit adventurous, let your server choose your meal for you.

uchi

Uchi (904 Westheimer Rd., Houston, Texas 77006)
If your road trip budget allows and you’re a fan of sushi, check out Uchi, a Japanese restaurant and sushi bar. It offers a tasting menu of both hot and cold items (e.g., flounder, yellowtail, big eye tuna, salmon and Wagyu beef), as well as an extensive variety of routinely updated daily selections or full-menu staples.
Oklahoma City, Oklahoma

Many road trippers may pass through states in the middle of the country and, Oklahoma City is a stop you’ll want to make. The city has a plethora of good eats, and these options are easily accessible for travelers along Interstate 235.

iron star

Iron Star (3700 N. Shartel Avenue, Oklahoma City, OK 73118)
What’s more American than BBQ? Named for Belle Starr, a notorious Oklahoma female outlaw, Iron Star specializes in fine dining with true smokehouse flavor and offers a unique and tasty spin on comfort foods. A few items from their menu include: Smokestack Nachos, Mama’s Deviled Eggs, Slow Smoked St. Louis Ribs, Seaboard Farms Pulled Pork and Brown Sugar Cured Beef Brisket. If you’re looking for a restaurant that prides itself on delivering hospitality, look no further than Iron Star.

pearls oyster bar

Pearl’s Oyster Bar (5641 N. Classen Blvd., Oklahoma City, OK 73118)
Most people don’t associate seafood with Oklahoma, but Pearl’s Oyster Bar has outstanding reviews and is known for its sustainable seafood practices. In fact, the restaurant has remained Oklahoma City’s seafood leader for over 30 years. They have a rooftop patio available for private dinners and events. Some southern menu items include: The Ultimate Crab Cake, Alligator Tail, Famous Fried Cheese and, of course, oysters galore.
Richmond, Virginia

Virginia’s capital is one of the oldest cities in the nation. It offers many food options that are accessible from Interstates 95, 64 or 195. Consider stopping at one of these spots before continuing on to visit Richmond’s historic sites.

proper pie

Proper Pie (2505 E. Broad St., Richmond, VA 23223)
This fast casual restaurant has a lot of options for those with dietary concerns, including vegan sweet and savory pies. They use locally-sourced fruits and vegetables and the pie crust is out of this world. Fun fact: the restaurant was opened using Kickstarter to raise $15,000.

Coriander

Coriander (3125 W. Cary St. Richmond, VA 23221)
Coriander is an Armenian restaurant that also offers Mediterranean and vegetarian fare, including homemade wraps, bowls (like the Coriander bowl – white cabbage, red cabbage, onions, tomatoes, cucumbers, lettuce, rice, feta, yogurt sauce and choice of three salads) and fresh homemade bread (made daily).
Jersey City, New Jersey

Jersey City is located across from Manhattan Island and offers delicious food without the congestion of the big city. These eateries are located along Interstate 78.

white star bar

White Star Bar (230 Brunswick St., Jersey City, NJ 07302)
The burgers at this American gastropub are five-star rated. Additional items that are featured on the menu include Bacon Mac and Cheese, Fried Pickles, BBQ Baby Back Ribs and Spaghetti Squash. White Star also has brunch on Saturdays and Sundays from 11 a.m. – 4 p.m. The Chorizo Kale Hash is a must-try.

Kraverie

Kraverie (24 Mercer St., Jersey City, NJ 07302)
This “hole-in-the-wall” spot has a great Korean fusion menu, and sweet and savory crepes. In fact, they have an entire menu devoted only to crepes! There is a nice selection Korean rice bowls, noodle bowls, Korean and fish tacos, and a Kraverie burger (served with lettuce, tomato, onion, kimchi, provolone cheese and spicy mayo on a brioche roll), but customers also rave about the Kimchi Fried Rice. The atmosphere is fun and lively, and although the venue is small, customers say the wait isn’t long (and it’s worth it).

Safe travels and bon appetite!

HOW TO MINIMIZE HAIL DAMAGE!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Oh, hail! Those pellets of ice might not seem like a big deal, but they can be costly if you don’t prepare for them while the sky is still clear.
According to the National Oceanic Atmospheric Administration (NOAA), hailstorms cause $1 billion in damages to crops and property each year. Hailstones can reach speeds of up to 100 mph and range from the size of a dime to the size of a softball.
If you live in an area that experiences a lot of hailstorms, make sure you’re hail-ready to help minimize the damage. Here are a few tips to ensure that this weather phenomenon won’t catch you off guard.

1. Hail-Proof Your Home’s Roof
A great place to start any hail-proofing mission is on the roof. The roof is the most vulnerable area of your home as it bears the brunt of the storm. One effective protection measure is to use roofing materials that are tough enough to defend your home from a hail assault.
Roofing materials are rated based on how well they perform on an Underwriters Laboratories (UL) test, which involves dropping steel balls of various size to determine how well the materials hold up after impact. The Institute for Business & Home Safety (IBHS) determined that modified asphalt shingles are the most hail-resistant.
If a new roof is not an option, then a good place to start is a roof inspection. Check for holes and other vulnerabilities that can be patched up to prevent hail from getting inside and causing water damage. If the condition of the roof looks poor, hire an expert to thoroughly examine it. Do you have skylights? Make sure you increase their impact resistance by using a protective screen.

2. Prepare Your Windows
The roof isn’t the only area of your home about which you should be concerned. Fast moving hail can crack or even punch holes in siding and shatter windows. This kind of breakage leaves the interior of your home vulnerable to flying hailstones and flooding. Consider purchasing impact resistant windows and siding to minimize the effects of hailstorms.
3. Additional Hail Considerations
Do you have an air conditioning unit? Check for exposed coils and other vulnerable areas of the AC unit and install shielding to keep it safe. Are there trees on your property? Trimming back branches can prevent them from falling onto your home during a storm and causing additional problems.

4. Protect Your Car from Hail
Hailstones can turn a beautiful car into a dimpled mess in minutes, and the costs to restore your vehicle’s exterior can put even more of a dent in your wallet. Auto claims for hail damage average between $2,000 and $3,000*.
Parking in enclosed structures isn’t always an option, but there are other measures you can take when the forecast calls for hail. Cutting edge protective covers that fold up small enough to fit in your trunk are available for purchase. Some are so high tech, they blow up like a balloon in order to keep your car safe. A cost effective alternative is to use thick blankets and towels – or even your floor mats – to cover your vehicle.

5. Insurance Coverage for Hail Damage
Sometimes even your best efforts are not enough to prevent the damage that can result from a strong hailstorm. To ensure your car is protected, make sure you have comprehensive insurance. Although this is an optional coverage, the benefits can be extremely worthwhile, as the coverage also includes glass replacement.
Hail happens, but it doesn’t have to be a devastating event. Planning and preparation will help you protect your property and be ready for when a hailstorm hits.

By Bob Abram, Product Planning Manager, Yokohama Tire Corporation

Daily life is filled with endless choices: regular or diet, credit or debit, paper or plastic? Not all the choices are of major-league importance, but others could have a profound effect, so it’s important to make the right choice. A good example is tires: There are lots of types to choose from, but getting the correct one is vital because it impacts your vehicle’s handling, comfort, fuel efficiency and safety.
For many, tires are kind of like auto insurance: not top-of-mind, until the need arises. Makes sense: tires certainly look simple – black and round – but the truth is, they are highly engineered technical wonders designed to work in concert with a vehicle’s braking and steering systems. Tire science has come a long way, creating tires that last longer and are more fuel efficient. For example, at Yokohama our engineers developed a technology that blends orange oil with rubber to create a special compound that enhances traction and fuel economy with longer tread wear life.
Tires take a daily pounding over all sorts of surfaces and in all kinds of weather conditions, yet they continue to perform with incredible effectiveness. We change our clothes to match the weather outside, when it’s 25 or 95 degrees. Choosing the right materials makes all the difference. Tires have to work in extremes as well, but without a change of materials. We also wear different clothes if we are going on a date or mowing the grass. Tires have to work the same if we are commuting at 10 mph or enjoying a spirited drive in the mountains.
Tires are the only part of a vehicle that actually touches the road, but most people don’t even know what type of tires are on their car. One reason is there are so many types of tires. There are about 3,500 sizes and types from dozens of manufacturers, and that can cause confusion for anybody. But the more information consumers collect and understand, the better prepared they will be for the vast selection that awaits them.
Basically, having the wrong tire on a vehicle is akin to wearing shoes that don’t fit – they don’t work well and may be harmful. Cornering, acceleration, wet road traction, tire wear, fuel economy, ride and styling can be modified by changing tires. However, choosing the wrong wheels and tires can result in a disappointment with handling, ride and tread wear. In short, knowing what types of tires are available is important because it can save money and fuel, vastly improve a vehicle’s ride and handling, and can be essential for your safety.

A tire generally delivers both mileage and performance, but not both equally. Tires using a harder rubber compound will last longer and boost gas mileage, but could deliver less traction and more noise, while softer tread compound tires handle well but wear more quickly.
The first step to selecting the right tires is to consider how they will be used. Consumers should think about how far and fast they typically drive, the weather and road conditions they encounter, how they want the vehicle to perform and look, how much money they want to spend, how long they plan on keeping the vehicle, and the weight and type of vehicle the tires will be mounted on.
Here are some basic definitions on different types of tires to help you pick the best tire for your vehicle:
All-Season Tire: As stated: a tire designed for all four seasons. They can potentially eliminate the need for snow tires in some moderate winter areas.
High-Performance Tire: Tires designed for responsive handling at higher speeds.
Light Truck Tire: Tires designed for sport utility vehicles, pickup trucks, recreational vehicles and some small commercial vehicles.
Radial Tire: Radial describes the way the tire is constructed. These tires are on most passenger cars as well as light trucks.
Touring Performance Tire: A tire providing the ride comfort of a standard passenger car tire, yet possessing some high-performance tire characteristics.
Replacing tires and buying auto insurance are not as exciting as getting tickets to a great concert or sporting event, but the more you know beforehand, the better your chance of making the right choice and getting exactly what you need.

SEVEN ACTIVITIES TO KEEP KIDS ENTERTAINED IN THE CAR!!!

Are we there yet?” If you’re a parent, you’ve undoubtedly heard that phrase countless times in car. Yes, long and short road trips can test your patience, and your kids’, but there are tricks to making the time spent in the car fly by.

Start by planning things ahead of time to get creative with ways to keep the kids amused wherever the road leads. Take a look at these seven inexpensive and fun games and activities that will distract the kids while you’re en route:

Alphabet Game
The Alphabet Game is a car classic. Players look for words beginning with each letter of the alphabet. If a player spots a sign with the words “Burger Lover,” the letters “B” or “L” can be used. The first player to get every letter of the alphabet in sequence wins. A fun twist on this game is to have the kids record each word and compose a story at the end. Another variation of the game is to play it in reverse.

I Spy
I Spy is another classic game that can keep kids occupied for quite a while. One player is designated as the “Spy.” This player carefully selects an object in sight and says: “I spy with my little eye something that starts with the letter, number…” The other players take turns trying to identify the object by asking questions about the object. Some popular questions include the following:

Is it bigger than a football?
Does it need batteries?
Is it alive?

The phrasing of the statement can change to “something blue” or “something that sounds like…” The player who answers correctly then becomes the “Spy.”

Cookie Sheet Play Station
Bringing a cookie sheet along for the ride is a better idea than you might think – they conveniently fit in seat back pockets and can double as a lap tray, providing a surface for coloring, activity books and even Play-Doh. The metallic surface is great for fun magnets, including word magnets that the kids can compose poems and stories out of. Bonus: It also doubles as a great snack tray.

License Plate Game
The license plate game involves spotting the different plates from all 50 states while you’re on the road – this can take a long time as Hawaii and Alaska plates are sometimes scarce in the lower 48. Players can work together in teams or compete against one another. To make things more interesting, you can encourage the kids to add the capitals to earn bonus points.

Geocaching or Letterboxing
Geocaching has become an increasingly popular activity – it’s like a modern-day treasure hunt. Participants use GPS technology to locate a hidden waterproof box in a specified area. These boxes contain logbooks to sign and sometimes contain toys or trinkets for trading. Letterboxing is a similar activity that involves solving clues and puzzles to locate the box, which contains a stamp to mark in a personal notebook and a logbook to sign. These activities can take the family on an adventure and serve to break up a long road trip.

Road Trip Bingo
Get creative with road trip bingo. Parents can customize fun cards out of cardboard and fill the bingo boxes with things you might see along the way or buy pre-made bingo cards. Pennies can be used as markers. Add some incentive to the game by offering small amounts of money or trinkets and toys for the winner of each round. The kids can collect their winnings at the end of the trip and use the money they win to buy small souvenirs.

Twenty Questions
One player picks an object or subject in their mind while others take turns asking 20 simple “yes” or “no” questions to reveal the answer. The trick is to be selective and strategic with the questions. Whoever guesses correctly gets to pick the object in the next round. If everyone is still stumped after their 20 questions are up, the player wins and gets to choose another object or subject. The next time you’re on a long road trip with the family, try out some of these activities to keep your kids entertained. This will make for a smooth ride for everyone and also help the time pass faster…and before you know it you’ll be at your destination.

Best Apps to Improve your Lifestyle in 2017

Smartphones have brought the internet to the pockets of close to 70 percent of Americans, according to a study conducted by the Pew Research Center, and the majority of these smartphone owners download and use apps. These mobile apps take advantage of device features not available to traditional browsers, such as easy account login using fingerprint technology, GPS location for maps and zip code lookup and access to the built-in camera and microphone.

There’s no shortage of apps available to users: Google Play store and the Apple store both have around 2 million apps available to download, covering every conceivable lifestyle need.

Here are a few of our favorites.
1. Dining Out Online reviews have changed the way Americans dine. While sites like Yelp and Trip Advisor can be great places to comb through restaurant reviews, OpenTable goes above and beyond by enabling users to view restaurants with open tables and book reservations in real-time directly through the app. OpenTable includes restaurant reviews, menus, photos and a blog. Bonus: OpenTable is an international app.
2. Streaming Music There are many noteworthy apps for streaming music on your mobile device. Spotify and Pandora are two of the most well-known, but Deezer is quickly making its way to the top of the list. Users can search more than 40 million tracks for their favorite tunes and can use the app’s features to discover new artists. What makes Deezer unique is that the app customizes its sound catalog around personal taste. Its “Go with the Flow” feature suggests additional artists and songs based on your existing playlists. Bonus: Deezer playlists are ad free and work offline!
3. Road Trips Have you ever gone on a road trip and found out later that you drove right by some of the best attractions on your route? Roadtrippers is an app designed to help travelers find amazing places and hidden treasures without missing a beat. Forget sifting through Trip Advisor recommendations – Roadtripper allows users to plan their driving route from point A to point B and can customize points of interest based on established categories, including attractions, natural wonders, historic sites and hotel and food accommodations. These destinations can all be conveniently saved for future reference. Bonus: Users can also view estimated fuel costs for their trips.
4. Home Security

Home security systems help protect your assets, and these systems have become more advanced with smart home technology. WardenCam360 is an app that allows users to convert old smartphones and tablets into tools for real-time video surveillance of your residence. App features include a motion detector that automatically triggers established cameras and night vision. Recordings are stored and saved to your Google Drive for free, and app users can opt to receive alerts and even have screenshots sent to their smartphone. Bonus: Two-way talk capabilities allow users to listen to what’s going on and even talk to your pets and children!
5. Parenting

Our top pick for parenting apps is MamaBear, which advertises itself as “The Ultimate Parenting App.” MamaBear allows parents to track and monitor their children’s online activity beyond using a keylogger or Google search – the app is a catch-all social media monitoring tool. Parents receive alerts when their kids are tagged in photos, use foul language or are being cyberbullied. They can also monitor phone activities, such as text messaging, and set speeding alerts for teens with driver’s licenses. Bonus: Parents can use the app to send family messages and photos.

Car Buying and its impact on insurance rates.

If you are in the market to buy a car—either new or pre-owned—it is a good idea to research insurance rates before you reach a final decision. According to the Highway Loss Data Institute, vehicles are rated by their “crash test.” Crash tests are performed on most makes and models of cars, and evaluate how well a vehicle protects its occupants in a crash.

How are insurance premiums calculated?

Annually, the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety and its sister organization the Highway Loss Data Institute, analyze the actual insurance losses associated with the most popular vehicle makes and models. The rankings of these two organizations give consumers an opportunity to gauge how their vehicle choices will affect their auto premiums. Keep in mind that many makes and models popular with younger drivers may carry a higher premium. Annually, Insure.com prepares a list of the most- and least- expensive cars to insure.

Which vehicles are likely to have the lowest insurance premiums?

Today’s version of a family car—a large sedan, mid-size SUV or minivan. These cars tend to be driven by people who are less likely to speed or drive recklessly.

How to keep premiums down?

Bigger isn’t always better when it comes to lowering premiums. Some of the super-size models could actually increase the cost of your insurance. Why would a luxury SUV whose typical driver is both affluent and conservative be a risk? Two words: theft magnet. Many factors affect the rates for collision and comprehensive insurance and theft is one of them. Another factor is what happens when two cars collide. Larger vehicles are routinely linked to higher-dollar damage to other cars.

Other important factors to consider.

Talk to an insurance agent before you buy your next vehicle. Once you have narrowed your choices to two or three models, ask if any of the premiums differ significantly. Some models have higher theft or repair rates. A different engine may affect the cost of insurance. A convertible may cost more to insure than a hard top. When you speak with Auto Insurance Center we will be able to advise you on the impact each vehicle will have on your payments.

The vehicle you choose is only part of the equation—you, your lifestyle and your driving record will also impact the cost of your insurance. . Talk to Auto Insurance Center today and ask for a free quote. 405-942-8867 or www.aicok.net
