MONMOUTH CIVIC CHORUS SINGS MODERN MUSIC

Vibrant modern music in Hebrew and Latin will be heard when the Monmouth Civic Chorus performs Leonard Bernstein’s jazzy Chichester Psalms, Zoltan Kodaly’s impassioned Missa Brevis, and Eric Whitacre’s tender Five Hebrew Love Songs. The concert is on Sunday, March 8, 2015, 4:00 pm, at the First Presbyterian Church, 255 Harding Road (Tower Hill), Red Bank. Tickets are $30 adult, $27 senior, $25 group (10 or more), $5 student. Tickets and information are available at www.monmouthcivicchorus.org or (732) 933-9333.

Entitled A Joyful Noise, the concert focuses on contemporary classical music. Bernstein’s Chichester Psalms is based on Psalm texts, with the angelic voice of a boy soprano and the colorful sounds of harp and percussion. Whitacre’s Five Hebrew Love Songs are settings of poems by his wife, a singer who was born and raised in Jerusalem. Kodaly wrote his Missa Brevis while he was in hiding during the Nazi occupation of Hungary.

The Monmouth Civic Chorus has been called "close to perfect" (Asbury Park Press), "alive and evocative" (The Star-Ledger) and "exceptional" (Red Bank Green). The Chorus is the proud recipient of the 2008 ASCAP/Chorus America Alice Parker Award, and the 2010 Spinnaker Award for Arts and Culture from the Eastern Monmouth Area Chamber of Commerce.

Artistic Director Ryan James Brandau holds the Doctor of Musical Arts and Master of Music degrees from the Yale School of Music, an MPhil in historical musicology from the University of Cambridge (United Kingdom), and a BA in Music from Princeton University. Now in his third season with the Monmouth Civic Chorus, Dr. Brandau is also Artistic Director of Princeton Pro Musica and works with the famed Symphonic Choir at Westminster Choir College of Rider University.

MONMOUTH CIVIC CHORUS NOMINATED FOR PEOPLE’S CHOICE AWARD

The Monmouth Civic Chorus is pleased to announce its nomination for Favorite Choral Group in the 2015 JerseyArts.com People’s Choice Awards. The Chorus is among 96 organizations and 10 arts districts nominated for the yearly awards program run by Discover Jersey Arts to honor the work of New Jersey’s vital, vibrant and diverse arts organizations. Discover Jersey Arts is a cosponsored project of the ArtPride New Jersey Foundation and New Jersey State Council on the Arts/Department of State dedicated to increasing the awareness of and participation in the arts in New Jersey.

“We’re incredibly grateful for this nomination,” said Matthew Izzo, Little Silver, Monmouth Civic Chorus President. “Since Red Bank is our home, we’re especially pleased that Red Bank is also nominated, as Favorite Arts District. We’re honored to be recognized by our N.J. colleagues, and to be a part of such a strong arts community that supports each other and works to help one another thrive. We hope our wonderful community of music lovers will support us and Red Bank by voting in this year’s Awards.”

Nominees for the People’s Choice Awards were nominated by their peers through the Jersey Arts Marketers network, which is made up of hundreds of nonprofit arts groups across the state. “The nominees should be very proud of the work they’re doing to establish N.J. as a destination for arts and culture,” said Jim Atkinson, ArtPride New Jersey Foundation’s Director of Programs and Services.

Ballots are prepped for arts lovers across the state to vote for their favorite N.J. arts organizations in 16 categories.  From favorite performing arts center to favorite dance company, favorite art gallery to favorite arts district, it's the public's turn to decide who's who among the Garden State's cultural community.  Public voting began January 7 and runs through February 19, 2015.  Winners will be announced in early March and will be honored at the New Jersey Conference on Tourism, held each year at the Golden Nugget in Atlantic City. For an online ballot and a full list of nominees and categories, please visit www.JerseyArts.com/peopleschoice
