Oh, the irony.  Google+ is forcing you to create a Google Identity for your youtube account.  The fact that I don't want a Google Identity for my youtube account is apparently beside the point.  Since I didn't want my real name splashed all over my youtube account, it automatically created a Google+ page for it, even though the page is completely useless.

The irony part, however, is that I didn't learn anything about this until I looked at my youtube account in Safari.  Normally I use Chrome on my Macbook Pro,but for the past couple of weeks Chrome has been throwing a server error 500 whenever I tried to do certain things on youtube while I was logged in.  Today it started throwing that error on every single youtube page I tried to view while I was logged in.  I could delete all my cookies (effectively logging out) and see pages fine, but if I wanted to be logged in I got the error 500 along with a huge block of text.  Frustrated, I decided to see if it was a problem with my browser.  Apparently it was because when I logged in using Safari, it forced me to choose an identity (ignoring the fact that I told them months ago I wanted to keep my youtube username and NOT use my real name on it) and once it went through that process I was able to go back to Chrome and voila! the error 500 is mostly gone (it still shows up when I try to view a user's page).

So, Chrome is messed up.  And Google is messed up for forcing this on their users (NOT EVERYTHING HAS TO BE SOCIAL!).  Eventually, perhaps, Google will become annoying enough that everyone will leave them.  But, hopefully they'll get their act together before then.

"It seems never to have occurred to Ortiz, nor to the career prosecutors in her office in charge of the prosecution, Stephen Heymann and Scott Garland, that there is something wrong with overcharging, and then raising the ante, merely to wring a guilty plea to a dubious statute.

"Nor does it occur generally to federal prosecutors that there’s something wrong with bringing prosecutions so complex that they are guaranteed to bankrupt all but the wealthiest.

"These tactics have become so normal within the Department of Justice that few who operate within the bowels of this increasingly corrupt system can even see why it is corrupt. Even most journalists, who are supposedly there to tell truth to power, no longer see what’s wrong and even play cheerleader."

An excellent take on sending things to near space.

A Toy Train in Space

_On Aug 24th 2012 we sent my son's favorite train "Stanley" to space in a weather balloon with a HD camera and an old cell phone for GPS. He was recovered 27 miles away in a corn field and we got some great footage of the trip. This video documents the journey from liftoff to landing.

My 4 year old and Stanley are inseparable like Calvin and Hobbes. He's been attached to him since he was two, and they play, sleep and do everything together. I animated Stanley's face with After Effects and Photoshop to bring him to life how I imagine my son sees him._
