Selected passages from NightRacer:

“What happened?”

“We happened. We, humans, discovered how to travel faster than light a little too soon for our intelligence level, and we started grabbing planets. I think somebody out there got mad and gave us the Grass.”

“Like some ant bait,” Racer said. “You sprinkle some sweet bait, the ants carry it into the anthill, everybody has a great party, and then the colony dies.”

“Yup,” Julie said. “We are acting like pests.”

“So what do we do now?” Racer asked.

“Learn to survive, apologize, and stop annoying the others.”

“Learn to survive,” Racer said. “Of course. Fight if you can, but never stop learning.”

NightRacer is a 60-year old former cadet from Earth who took off and left the "base" in search for his daughter. He found himself lured into Providence, considered a "touched" town in an alternate world. Oddly, the setting is reminiscent of an American Old West film where a stranger walks in on an abandoned town and there's a nagging feeling that danger lies ahead. You can't help but feel a little bit disoriented because you try to reconcile the fact that it's a futuristic story but it has elements of western lore. Though I am not certain if this is the intended effect, setting-wise, it’s quite fascinating.
What I particularly like about the story is that the reader is thrust into this new world without any real knowledge of what has happened. The bits and pieces that are revealed through dialogues and NightRacer’s conversations with other characters keep the story moving forward and the mystery is always gnawing at the reader. This actually quickens the pace because one is forced to keep turning the pages for the next set of clues.

The uncertainty hangs like a dark cloud over head and there’s always an eerie feeling that some form of danger is afoot. NightRacer is a compelling character. His complexity is borne out of the extraordinary situation he’s thrust into. His motivations are clear but is tormented by the effects of his erased memories, which makes him angry, confused, but determined.

The narrative style is fluid and not encumbered by lengthy descriptions. This, in a way, contributes to the good pacing of the story. Certain political ideologies and concepts are subtly presented which lends plausibility to the cleverly written plot.
