What I love about my cosmetic and outpatient vein practice is that I can have balance in my life. I can be a valuable member of my family because I get to go home at night and participate in the lives of those I love. I also think that sleep matters and being able to sleep at night and not have to rush in and work all night and all the next day allows me to be my most refreshed and focused self, which gives me room to give to others (the secret of life)!

People often ask me if I feel different as a doctor focusing on outpatient surgical procedures versus life and death operations in the hospital. I have to say I do feel different, but not in the way I imagined. When I operated long hours in the hospital and saved lives with aortic surgery, the reward for me was technical but the patient outcome was multifactorial. I never felt like a hero because I knew that whether that patient lived or died had "some" to do with my skill but had a lot more to do with my team and with "fate". As an outpatient surgeon, my patient's outcome is much more directly linked to my individual effort and fate has little to do with it. When my patient does well in the office, I feel like a million bucks and when they feel like their life has been changed for the better under my care- my heart skips a beat and I hold my breath. For me- it is that ability to directly change the life of another human- that ignites my light and delivers infectious joy!

The worst part of change is the frustration of falling behind on your goals and losing direction, but the best part is that you are in charge! Forgive yourself! Get up and try again. Tomorrow you get another chance, don't give up. Be relentless.

The Harvard Medical Review suggests nurturing yourself daily will reduce the risk of stroke. Start every day with a heart of gratitude to reduce stress.

Having black-eyed peas on New Years is a long time family tradition to usher in good luck. My mom once drove up from Houston to San Antonio to visit me in the ER where I was working as a "pit boss" when I was a second-year surgery resident to bring me black-eyed peas! Here's a recipe I absolutely love:

"All the darkness in the world cannot extinguish the light of a single candle" - St. Francis of Assisi

Starting my own practice has allowed me to take good care of patients and be myself at the same time. I can be excellent at what I do and a woman at the same time! Red lipstick, hot pink tulip chairs, and genuine enthusiasm

My light will continue to grow if I follow my great-grandfather's advice- "Ellen, be yourself and the world will come to you!" he was absolutely right- if we are true to ourselves- we open the portal inside- to receive the light from what is around us and then we can pass that light onto others. In this way, your one light is all it takes to defeat darkness.
