Been looking at Plasma 5. I had in the past and gave up. I'm about to now too. In the center of my screen it says (rough):
plasma 5 could not start process unable to create io-slave klauncher said unknown protocol file
When I go to change wallpapers (folder for the slideshow) it gives me three popup boxes telling me errors. When I try to select the folder with all my wallpapers it won't allow that. Nothing happens.
There are other annoyances too, Can''t drag an icon from the kicker menu to the panel to set up icons there. When I try to drag one down it enlarges the space, slides the task bar over but won't show the icon. Can't slide the taskbar back to the left unless I choose the burger menu on the far right bottom in the system tray area.
There are many more. This is just the start. Is this alpha software? I've plasma 5.2 installed from the kubuntu ppa next-backports.
No app allows for "set wallpaper". When

What I'm getting from the responses here is that people don't quite understand that some of us have a long established install and we don't distro hop. There's no "try this or try that" distro for us. Though I do appreciate your help it isn't viable. Consider this an install that must stand as is.
Frankly I consider this, if it is a matter of Plasma 5 not being supported in anything prior to 15.04 as a major failure by the KDE folks. This is after all a desktop manager for goodness sake.

It isn't deprecated.. The next-backports is officially part of a PPA done by the KUBUNTU crew. It would be hard for any of us to believe that a ppa that contains the NEWLY released plasma 5.2 as already deprecated.

That's absolutely NOT going to happen. I'm not going to trade a beta of the OS for a beta of the OS and a beta of the Plasma desktop 5.2.Mar 24, 2015

+Jim Blaich it is now deprecated, and it is now unsupported. Vivid beta is out, and that is supported. We simply do not have the human hours available to support both, so we chose the future. Please don't continue to use next and next-backports. As stated at https://community.kde.org/Plasma/Packages#Kubuntu you can safely upgrade, and I have personally tested that upgrade path. A fresh install of Vivid beta is of course, safer and faster.Mar 24, 2015
Honestly, those guys are now looking pretty unreliable to me. They add the BRAND NEW plasma 5.2 (did I mention that it is BRAND NEW?) to their PPA and then claim it is no longer to be used and they exclude all prior version of Kubuntu just because they don't want to spend time making it work.
I've been using Linux and (K)ubuntu for a long time. I'm not new. However, unlike most people that I see online, I actually use my product for my work and home. That means that I cannot ever afford to do the updates like this.
Now, don't think that I tried this on my main rig. I didn't. I tried it on a second rig. However, everything I said above is valid.Mar 24, 2015
You are confusing "don't want to spend time" with volunteers being "able spend time" on this.
I completely understand your frustration, but Plasma 5 in 14.10 was never a supported thing, and meant to be a tech preview for the adventurous and curious.Mar 24, 2015
FWIW I got a stable install of 5.2 running on 14.10 but only after the PPA ppa:kubuntu-ppa/backports and related packages (which I'd had installed but forgotten about) were purged from the system, check that and see how you go.
It would be helpful if the kubuntu.org website was updated to reflect the deprecation of the next-backports PPA for 14.10.Mar 25, 2015
