Chemistry sets seem to have fallen out of favor in recent years, but there’s a movement to bring them back—or at least recapture some of the unstructured experimentation the old sets encouraged. In this gallery, we take a look at some vintage sets from the collection of the Chemical Heritage Foundation Museum in Philadelphia. They provide an interesting perspective on how public attitudes towards science shifted over the course of the 20th century, says Kristen Frederick-Frost, the museum’s curator of artifacts and collections manager.

Learn how to build, test, and deploy mobile apps in a hands-on, student centered environment. This course covers how to use Apple’s latest iOS software development kit and integrated development environment (Xcode) to build, test, and simulate apps for the iPhone. Participants will implement a number of applications, centered around a diverse collection of core APIs and software design patterns.

Developing Mobile Applications in iOS is part of a new series of courses on computer science and software development hosted by the Illinois Institute of Technology (IIT) Department of Computer Science at 1871 in downtown Chicago. These will include a range of course offerings for software developers interested in extending their skill sets as well as for non-techies who want to understand the innards of the technologies they build their businesses on. The programs are part of a collaboration between IIT’s Department of Computer Science and School of Applied Technology.

For more information, contact Mary La Fleur at (630) 682-6030 or mlafleur@iit.edu

Master of Health Physics student Eric Galicia is one of two winners of this year’s Stony Brook University Flame Challenge. The challenge, sponsored by the American Chemical Society and the American Association for the Advancement of Science and now in its fourth year, calls on scientists to submit written or video explanations of complex subjects in ways 11-year old school children can understand.

"Looking at Vermeer's paintings, it seemed to me that he must have had a way to not only trace the shapes, but capture the colors of a projected image. If he could do that, his paintings might be a form of photography, achieved not with film and chemicals, but with the human hand. Vermeer's paintings might be 350 year-old color photographs."
Tim Jenison, a Texas-based inventor, attempts to solve one of the greatest mysteries in the art world:
How did Dutch master Johannes Vermeer manage to paint so photo-realistically 150 years before the invention of photography? Here's how he conducted his experiment.

This Hubble image shows IRAS 14568-6304, a young star that is cloaked in a haze of golden gas and dust. It appears to be embedded within an intriguing swoosh of dark sky, which curves through the image and obscures the sky behind.

Physicists at the Large Hadron Collider would like your help in studying the Higgs Boson. It’s true that they found the Higgs boson—which is responsible for giving all particles their mass—nearly two years ago, but its exact behavior is still mysterious. Now, the scientists are asking coders to develop algorithms that can reveal the Higgs’ properties.

Rigorous and relevant, academically demanding education grounded in real-world experiences.
Introduction

The College of Science offers students a rigorous, academically demanding education that is relevant and grounded in real-world experiences.

Mission

To create and share mathematical, computational, and scientific knowledge and to join with colleagues and partners in advancing new and innovative education, scholarship, research, and application.

Description

In fall 2013, IIT College of Science and Letters will transform into the IIT College of Science, and the letters departments will join with psychology to form the new college of human sciences.

The formation of a standalone College of Science with applied mathematics, biology, chemistry, computer science, mathematics and science education, and physics departments presents a great opportunity to grow and strengthen these areas and their programs.

IIT College of Science educates outstanding math- and science-oriented students who want to make a difference in the world. The College of Science is the source of the core knowledge that drives innovation, and it offers students a rigorous, academically demanding education that is relevant and grounded in real-world experiences. It provides students with multiple pathways to the future, whether graduate school, business and industry, or entrepreneurship, in their own discipline or outside of their discipline.
