"Looking at Vermeer's paintings, it seemed to me that he must have had a way to not only trace the shapes, but capture the colors of a projected image. If he could do that, his paintings might be a form of photography, achieved not with film and chemicals, but with the human hand. Vermeer's paintings might be 350 year-old color photographs."

Chemistry sets seem to have fallen out of favor in recent years, but there’s a movement to bring them back—or at least recapture some of the unstructured experimentation the old sets encouraged. In this gallery, we take a look at some vintage sets from the collection of the Chemical Heritage Foundation Museum in Philadelphia. They provide an interesting perspective on how public attitudes towards science shifted over the course of the 20th century, says Kristen Frederick-Frost, the museum’s curator of artifacts and collections manager.

Learn how to build, test, and deploy mobile apps in a hands-on, student centered environment. This course covers how to use Apple’s latest iOS software development kit and integrated development environment (Xcode) to build, test, and simulate apps for the iPhone. Participants will implement a number of applications, centered around a diverse collection of core APIs and software design patterns.

Developing Mobile Applications in iOS is part of a new series of courses on computer science and software development hosted by the Illinois Institute of Technology (IIT) Department of Computer Science at 1871 in downtown Chicago. These will include a range of course offerings for software developers interested in extending their skill sets as well as for non-techies who want to understand the innards of the technologies they build their businesses on. The programs are part of a collaboration between IIT’s Department of Computer Science and School of Applied Technology.

This Hubble image shows IRAS 14568-6304, a young star that is cloaked in a haze of golden gas and dust. It appears to be embedded within an intriguing swoosh of dark sky, which curves through the image and obscures the sky behind.
