Understandable to a degree, but it is totally safe if you learn correct form. At some point I'll try to make some form videos. In the meantime there are a lot of dudes teaching good form you can search on YouTube. On the other hand there are a lot of bad ones too.
But if you understand the mechanics and the form of the deadlift and activate everything correctly (ie - moving with the hams & glutes as the main focus) and do something you can handle strictly, then progress from there, you can do deadlifts safely.
Just take it slow and progress gradually only with what you can handle. Lifting is a marathon, not a sprint, so no rush.
