tl;dr - We call for funding all postdocs individually on fellowships. This would enable better tracking and control of these positions by funding agencies - and provide early career scientists with the autonomy needed to develop creative research projects and skills away from the bench.

Today, my co-organizers Daniel Colon-Ramos, Ron Vale, Harold Varmus & I are excited to announce ASAPbio, a meeting to discuss the use of preprints in biology. Because our venue has a very limited capacity, we hope that the majority of the discussion will happen online, before and during the meeting on Feb 16-17 (which will itself be livestreamed). Please weigh in on this issue by taking the survey, responding to the prompts in the forums, and sharing this with your networks! Thanks! http://asapbio.org/

Do you edit Wikipedia? Interested in getting free ASCB meeting registration in exchange for helping people make edits?

The American Society for Cell Biology (ascb.org) is holding their annual meeting in the convention center in San Diego on December 12-16. For the first time, the meeting will include a Wikipedia edit-a-thon from 8am-noon on Sunday December 13. ASCB is looking for a total of 10 moderators to help people make edits (participants will pre-register and will be instructed to make an account beforehand, and attendance will be capped at around 100). There will also be a small amount of decision-making and organization to do beforehand (figuring out how to keep track of progress during the event, etc, but nothing major because we will have some administrative help). The compensation is free registration to the meeting, so San Diego locals or those already planning to attend would be ideal! Interested parties should email Christina Szalinski <cszalinski AT ascb DOT org> with a couple of sentences about their editing experience and interest/involvement with cell biology.

For those who want to participate (but not moderate/facilitate) please sign up here: https://docs.google.com/forms/d/16ho5gbaMBtaxcIYPUnwJ52v4iTijtAZFciwVVX3Cye4/viewform
