Nucky Thompson is back. For most of season two it seemed like he had lost his touch, not to mention a lot of his friends and influence. The one thing he didn't lose was his ability to play the game.

"There was a painstaking amount of research in this 20-year passion project, in bringing this story and history alive for us,I can’t imagine 20 years of that level of research, and then having the wherewithal and the humanity, to take a couple chapters about the plight of African Americans in Atlantic City and turning it into the next book, The North Side.” –Thomas Peele

As a reader of Johnson's "Boardwalk Empire", I'm fully aware of what these two books have in store, a history of Atlantic City from the "idea" to the actual construction.

The Real Nucky - Now that season 2 is over it is a good time to take a look at the real historical figure who was the basis for Steve Buscemi's 'Nucky Thompson'.

Enoch Lewis "Nucky" Johnson (January 20, 1883 – December 9, 1968) was an Atlantic City, New Jersey political boss and racketeer. From the 1910s until his imprisonment in 1941, he was the undisputed “boss” of the Republican political machine that controlled Atlantic City and the Atlantic County government. Using his political position to his advantage, his rule encompassed the Roaring Twenties when Atlantic City was at the height of its popularity as a temporary refuge from Prohibition, his organization also being involved in bootlegging, gambling and prostitution.

Great stuff, Enoch "Nucky" Johnson was the quintessential bootlegger/racketeer/political impresario,...he wanted what he ever red blooded American desires, the might green back!! This Prohibition enabled those with political asperations and those just with a desire to fill their pockets and take over the market, started to do. This "noble experiment" was a nightmare from the get, due to the corruptibility of man, and one's desire to have a cocktail and will to do almost anything to get it, even paying 5X's the price of a shot/half pint/pint. Italian,Irish,Polish,Jewish-Americans all prospered due to the Prohibition decree, these people came to America with practically nothing and some had exactly nothing but the clothes on their backs, yet they weren't out begging for scraps, they used what was at their disposal to get the job done, back breaking work and low pay was still better than what the old country had to offer and once they caught a taste of the easy money to be made at bootlegging, stills popped up in certain ethnic neighborhoods and the police would raid those with no snow on their roofs, a sure sign that a illegal still was in use in the home, do to the cold weather in certain cities during the Winter. Nucky is truly a man who cares about the citizens of Atlantic City, some maybe more than others, especially if they can do something to aid Nucky's career of line his pockets, but also for the down trodden who had stumbled upon hard times, word is, even after he was released from prison, and no longer held any office, he still helped the townspeople of Atlantic City, handing out a couple of bucks and a kind word here and there, and basically just trying to be a good neighbor...no better no worse than anyone else in the era of Prohibition!!
