So Much Time Wasted Chasing Debt!

The problems associated with customers failing to pay on time have been quantified by recent research, which has found that the average business is spending a massive 130 hours each year chasing late payment.

Businesses are typically being paid 30 days beyond agreed terms, creating significant cash flow problems that threaten financial stability.

The sheer volume of these businesses is, according to Ernst & Young, serving to prolong the downturn and adversely affecting thousands of other businesses either directly or indirectly. For instance, while some are offered credit terms by suppliers which can't ultimately be met, others continue to be funded by the banks, which in turn is stifling the flow of credit to more viable businesses. Industry body, R3, say that 30% of businesses are regularly reliant on their maximum overdraft limit.

Businesses that continue to suffer from late payment are advised to consider the benefits of specialist commercial debt collection which can remove the time and resource burden of credit management through debt recovery.

DLS Law has been authorised by the SRA to take on Trainee Solicitors and is proud to announce that one of its legal assistants has officially started their training contract this week.

Antonio Nacca has begun his training contract, following a successful stint as a paralegal, which will enable him to become a fully qualified solicitor.

We asked Antonio if he had any advice for law students who are looking for a training contract. He responded:

‘I am extremely pleased to have obtained a training contract, given the current market.

My advice would be to work hard as it will pay off in the end and if you get the chance to work as a paralegal, take it and don’t hold out for a straight run at a training contract. If a firm feels like it has a top candidate who’s willing to go the extra distance already then they won’t look elsewhere for their next trainee.’

The UK's small and medium-sized businesses were owed a record £35.3 billion at the end of 2011 as the critical problem of late payment took yet another turn for the worse.

According to the half-yearly research from Bacs Payment Schemes, the average business is now owed a crippling £45,000 in outstanding payments to compound the cash flow pressures owners are facing at present.

Businesses are now waiting even longer to be paid – a staggering 29.6 days beyond agreed credit terms – meaning many aren't being paid until a full four months after the invoice was raised.

Following last week's news that corporate insolvencies rose for the fifth consecutive quarter during the first quarter of 2011, it's a problem that doesn't look like disappearing soon. However business owners can at least take heart from that fact that the proportion of firms experiencing late payment declined during the second half of 2011. (Hilton-Baird Research)

It's vitally important that business clamp down on late paying customers and ensure that their credit management as is the need to stay on top of customers from the moment an invoice is raised.
