Several news videos about Smith Engineering and Western Technologies. A couple show the Vectrex as well as other projects.

Looked like a fun place to work. I am sure it was just as hard as it was fun being toy and electronics works back in the 1970's and 1980's

Three ways to guarantee VDI users a top-notch UX

It's extremely important that users have a good experience interfacing with their virtual desktops; otherwise, they won't use them.

VDI users do not care about the underlying infrastructure and architecture and all the moving parts IT has to balance. They expect VDI to provide an experience that is at least as good as, if not better than, using a physical desktop. Those are often tough expectations to live up to, but all things considered, it's in IT's best interest to do whatever it can to provide a strong VDI user experience (UX).

The biggest key to ensuring a good end-user experience is to allocate sufficient hardware resources to virtual desktops to prevent performance from suffering. But there is more to providing a good VDI user experience than simply managing hardware resource allocations. Here are some general guidelines that apply to any VDI deployment.

End-user experience monitoring

Although the UX is subjective, it's important to know what's going on within a VDI deployment, and there are a variety of end-user experience monitoring products that focus on different key activities. A UX monitoring tool might, for example, measure the amount of time it takes users to login or for an application to load. There are also tools that measure input responsiveness and graphics quality.

Many of the available UX monitoring tools also notify administrators when certain aspects of the UX drop below pre-established standards. Some tools even attempt to perform automatic remediation or provide the VDI administrator with the information needed to diagnose the problem.

Plan for service outages

Outages are rare in the world of physical desktops because each desktop uses dedicated hardware. Furthermore, IT typically sets up redundant networking components such as domain controllers, DNS servers and network switches. That means a resource failure might impact a single user, or possibly a group of users, but nothing short of a power failure will cause a mass service outage.

Actions considered routine on a physical desktop can waste resources on a virtual desktop.
The best way to prevent an outage from occurring is to take advantage of redundancy. Every hardware and software component should be redundant, otherwise the failure of a single component could potentially result in a large-scale service disruption.

Of course, even the best plans can fall victim to Murphy's Law, so it's important to have a strategy for service outages. Such a plan might revolve around on-site support or it may involve an IT services support contract. In any case, there needs to be a pre-planned course of action for dealing with outages.

Adopt a "VDI way" of doing things

What this concept really boils down to is being conscious of what the VDI users and administrative staff are doing.

Remember that virtual desktops are really just virtual machines running on top of a hypervisor. Like any other virtual machines, virtual desktops must share the available hardware resources. If those resources run low, performance can suffer, so it is important to use the available hardware resources efficiently.

IT needs to adopt a VDI way of thinking about the various actions that might occur on a virtual desktop and determine whether they are necessary features to include. Actions considered routine on a physical desktop can waste resources on a virtual desktop. One example of this is hard disk defragmentation. Some operating systems perform automated hard disk defragmentation, which can help PC performance, but creates unnecessary storage I/O in a virtual desktop environment.

Some other things that IT might consider limiting include anti-malware scanning, Windows page file usage and Windows background apps. By default, Windows 10 allows background apps to download various types of data. From the user perspective, IT might consider restricting online activities. Playing high-definition YouTube videos, for example, consumes unnecessary resources.

The end-user experience in a VDI deployment is strongly connected to whether IT allocates enough hardware resources to users' virtual desktops, but also to how efficiently IT uses those resources. Administrators can further ensure a good UX by using monitoring software and by having plans for preventing and coping with outages.

Back to Xanath for more of their totally awesome ice creams and sobets! This time on the list: Madagascar Vanillia: Everything you want in a Vanillia and even more. Super fresh as always. Saffron: A very understated saffron from my point of view. (I eat lots of saffron) It's everything you want in an ice cream with the saffron contributing even more to the creamy texture/flavor of the experience. Those wanting a little more kick should get the saffron-ginger version. Strawberry Lemon Coconut Sorbet: Think of it as Strawberry sorbet with a kick, and a little side trip down coconut lane. The lemon and coconut flavors activate on you tongue a second after the strawberry hits it. This is a sorbet that self-cleans your palette while your senses beg for more! Banana, (something) (something): Think of Xanath's Banana ice cream as a banana bomb going off in your mouth! If you have ever wanted the flavor of fresh banana ice cream then this is your answer! Also included in the mix are little chocolate nibs, vanilla, and some other flavors I don't remember in the name, In all respects this can be a way to cheat and get a banana split put inside in cone. I think the pint I brought home is going missing soon! Huckleberry: This ice cream was a surprise to my mouth I did not take home (I already had four pints going with me!) I be back for some later one. Think of it as a toned-down blueberry with a little blackberry twist. The sad thing about my visit was the family was at home. So pints to go along with tasting at least half to the flavors before I left. it was a Yum Fest with a continuance in mini style later on. My thanks to the Sunday night staff on whose wrist tolerated my large take-out order. Especially the wrist wrenching sorbet that provided an entire week's workout in the span of 5 minutes!

Well presented and accomplished Gan Shalom! Your setting is idyllic. I love the fact your location is almost directly in between Orinda and Martinez and California outside the western edge of Briones Regional Park. The view on your grounds is one of a protected peace with a nice view of the green hills and trees all around. Sunny and pleasant and quiet. Were I to be buried this is one of the places I'd consider. As it was I attended the funeral of a friend. Know what I do about the family's desire for an accurate and respectful handling of family members, I praise Gan Shalom's staff for the quick and considerate services provided. On the day of the funeral the Rabbi and the staff members were kind as you could imagine any to be. People attending outside of Judaism were well accommodated in both consideration of their own views and in readings in both Hebrew and English. I loved the explanation of the meaning as well as the words. My thanks to the Rabbi and the staff for such nice handling of everything. As you might expect amenities included plenty of parking space, tissues, water, a air conditioned chapel on site, and a green awning at the outdoor seating providing shade and solace from the sun. All of the cemetery is on flat ground. On that day it was important to have this property due to at least one attendee who was having a hard time walking. So the ease of transitioning from the chapel to the grave site was much appreciated. One additional detail I noted is Gan Shalom seems to be in an mobile service shadow region. Some text messages did get through but most communications were limited. The location provided a natural way limit cell phone calls and keep the service respectful. Judging by the appearance of the other plots and grounds at Gan Shalom the gardening and grounds crew do a great job of taking care of the place. I am confident my friend will be well take care of until his family joins him when their time comes.

Recommend waiting until > 1 month after grand open before your first visit to Uoyakutei Japanese Restaurant. They have issued right now. Combined two visits on 6/24/16 & 7/6/16 into one review. Experience was same for opening day & about 2 weeks later. Service needs MUCH improvement. Both visits I was left standing at the door wondering if I seat myself or wait. Gave up finding the lack of attention to entering customers a problem & took an uninvited position at the bar. Placed my hands on bar and found the spot I had chosen was left dirty from lunch. Moved over a place to a cleaner location. Waited more and then gave up to wash my hands from bar stuff. Came back and still did not get attention from the wait staff. Finally a sushi chef handed me a paper take-out menu to get me started. Some time later after being flagged down by the chef a waitress finally stopped by to take my drink order. Theses kinds of problems continued throughout the entire meal for me and others. Worsening the problem of dining area management was that call-in orders seemed to be given preference over the customers in the dining room as far as attention went. 1st visit: Miso Soup Unagi Sushi Maguro Sushi California Roll Hot Tea 2nd Visit: Agedashi Tofu House Special - Tuna Lover's Roll Unagi Sushi Hot Tea I would qualify the food on both visits too be both average appearance, average texture, and average flavor. Nothing special. Nothing surprising. I was a bit disappointed in the house Tuna Lover's Roll. I expected better presentation and flavor than I received for something that was supposed to be a house specialty. Other things I noted about the preparedness and cleanliness of Uoyakutei: - Bar area not cleaned and set up for evening service. - Bathrooms not cleaned for evening service. - Front entrance area windows still not cleaned since before grand opening and 2 weeks later. - Excessive time for wait staff to notice customers, seat them, and take drink orders. - Empty dishes not cleared during the meal. - No offers to refill drinks during the meal. - Better overall management dining area needed. - Phone orders override attention given to seated customers. - One sushi chef kept sucking on a Starbucks Iced Coffee and sat it down right next to the food in the seafood refrigerator to keep it cold. - One waiter seemed to prefer telephone service. This left the other person being ambushed by tables that were not under her care that wanted to place more orders or have drinks refilled. - Bar seating was disturbed by orders being sent out in the middle of the two bar sections. - Bar seating area used as a take-out staging area. - Bar seating area used to store extra clean dishes and utensils used for the tables. - Wait staff seems to have problems using their Point Of Sale equipment. This back up new customer orders and slowed down exiting customer payment. - TV left over from previous tenant bar was dead on the wall. This required all bar customers to turn around to watch TVs on other walls. - Not all menu items were available for consumption. - No alcohol license. - Initial first day opening was not set in stone for one specific day. The problems above and a few more speak to larger issues. Their "Grand Opening" sign should have been reserved for a later time. Poor service and lack of preparedness tells me Uoyakutei should have used their first month open as a "Soft Opening" to work out the problems. I would guess the owners have some chef experience. But need more management experience and involvement to help smooth out Uoyakutei. Nothing that I received I would ever qualify as the worst sushi. Unlike another Yelper I did not get sick later. Nor was any of the Agedashi Tofu cold or dry. But I was also not impressed with the value of the experience for the money spent dur either visit. Give Uoyakutei try. But do so later after they get on their winning game.

Various meats including lamb, buffalo and venison. The perfect grinds you might need without making a mess of your kitchen. Special mixes for your BBQ too. Ask for their summertime specials with a mix of hamburger and bacon. It's the perfect mix. Save-More Meat Market has been my meat suppliers for years. Love their service with a smile, and that service comes with a better sale price on any day than most any major grocery store. The added plus? You'll never find a mass of brown meat in the center of your ground hamburger like I have seen at Safeway. Save-More Meat market beef it always top quality fresh goodness!
