Winter. Be gone!
When I accepted the invitation to give a talk in Mokena, IL on Feb. 28, I naively hoped that winter would be in decline, so I said I'd drive up (from Kansas where I'm filming Worn Out Welcome Mat - KS) in Tillie2, my (sorta) ...

My latest Tillie2 adventures, such as they are. Sigh.
For those of you following my travels on Facebook or through this blog, you might have picked up on some "issues" with my new Tillie2 that I acquired at the end of September 2014. Here's the latest... Ironically, my previou...

AlterNet changed their formatting, zapping brilliant writing like mine. Here's my last post, by popular demand. I'll be posting from a more prominent place on AlterNet quite soon. It's all good!
Homeless people have shelters to go to, a common belief comforting those who don’t know better.  Having just come from Carlisle Cares, the community-based shelter where my friend and colleague Pat LaMarche works, having ru...

Spreading the word about selling my fine lil' motorhome. Would appreciate your help finding a buyer. My time is limited...gulp...so help!
2006 Gulf Stream Yellowstone. One owner, lived in it FT. Nonsmoker, no harsh chemicals used inside. New brakes, tires, batteries. Well-maintained, my mechanic wanted to buy it! Great living space for 1-2 people. Lots of storage! No leaks, all systems work. $23,500.00 OBO Must sell. Will entertain reasonable offers. No owner financing. No agents or other scammers! 6302675424 This ad 113012087 was posted on September 07, 2014

Anyone need a little motorhome? Tillie is for sale. For a good cause. Please spread the word!
Diane Nilan has lived in her motor home "Tillie" since 2005, traveling the country to advocate for the homeless. Now she is selling the vehicle, and plans to donate a percentage of the sale to Hope Haven. Caption. (Doug Oleson – doleson@shawmedi). Homelessness advocate Diane Nilan is selling the ...

My latest from Kansas...with a plea for help!
Crawling though decrepit attics to find doubled-up families.  Cutting taxes for the highest income bracket to stimulate the Kansas economy. Discovering that a stable, financially comfortable community has close to 50% of thei...

Wonder why family/youth homelessness is growing?
I’m a nomad-by-choice. For the past 10 years, under the banner of HEAR US Inc., my nonprofit organization, I’ve traveled over 200,000 miles of mostly backroads travel chronicling homeless families and youth across the country...

Dental care for those unable to afford it. If you know anything about this--from personal experience or from watching loved ones suffer--please read this and sign the petition at the end. Share if you will...it will help.

This post really nails the "invisible" issue. Validates what I do at HEAR US, too!
Human suffering is never easy to see, but instead of complaining there should be an increased response -- a response not only from civil institutions or non-profits, but from society as a whole....

Our quest to ease homelessness of families/youth is ramping up with the Homeless Children and Youth Act just introduced. How important is this? What can you (with no money) do? Read my latest post.
For the agency charged with “utilizing housing as a platform for improving quality of life,” assuming that includes those with nowhere to go, the U.S. Dept. of Housing and Urban Development, HUD, has yet to step up to the tas...

URGENT! Mary's life is in our hands. Mary vs. Insurance Company. If she loses, she dies. The world will be a sadder place. We need to win. This HuffPo needs 2000+ likes FAST so we can go after the creeps. Please LIKE it on the HuffPo page and get others to do the same. Mary's a friend. I'm serious. HELP! Thanks!
People who love America love it because of the iconic stereotypes that - with rare exception - actually exist in small towns all across the United States. Each small town has at least one diner or coffee shop where the hamlet's local characters hang ...

giving voice and visibility to homeless children, youth and families...
Introduction
For a quarter of a century I've worked with homeless families, teens and adults, realizing that they have a slippery upward slope to climb.

Part of the problem, I've found by talking to countless people--legislators, policy wonks, ordinary folk--is lack of awareness. So, in true Nilan fashion, I set out to do whatever I can do to change that.

HEAR US Inc. is my nonprofit that strives to give voice and visibility to homeless children and youth. It's been an amazing journey!
