I've been to Naples. Homelessness is much worse than most imagine there. Here's my response to a recent op-ed column in the local paper.
(I read a column in the Naples Herald and have submitted this response to them. DDN) Kudos to Gary Levine and the Naples Herald for a thoughtful examination of the oft-ignored issue of homelessness (8/17/15). Mr. Levine po...

This will only get even more interesting as Pat LaMarche takes a stand with the Bangor Police Department.'
BANGOR, Maine — Green Party leader Pat LaMarche, a political activist, author and homeless shelter staffer, has taken offense to a Thursday morning post on Bangor Police Department’s Facebook page about panhandling and, in protest, she will be out in front of the station panhandling Monday morning. She’s calling the [...]

Have we hit a new low? My latest blog.
The cardboard sign poked out from the doorway where the family huddled. As Chicago’s Magnificent Mile shoppers and tourists streamed obliviously by, this (apparently) homeless family (I’m guessing grandma by her appearance) s...

My Kansas travel adventures are, well, adventurous. Here's my latest tale.
Last night I was comfortably ensconced in the Garden City, KS WalMart parking lot, Tillie (my van/home) parked on a nice flat spot, my shoes off, feet up, watching a movie I had downloaded earlier when I received a disconcert...

One thing about this kind of weather, it invigorates you! It does test your survival instincts and keeps them tweaked.

My latest from Kansas...with a plea for help!
Crawling though decrepit attics to find doubled-up families.  Cutting taxes for the highest income bracket to stimulate the Kansas economy. Discovering that a stable, financially comfortable community has close to 50% of thei...

Wonder why family/youth homelessness is growing?
I’m a nomad-by-choice. For the past 10 years, under the banner of HEAR US Inc., my nonprofit organization, I’ve traveled over 200,000 miles of mostly backroads travel chronicling homeless families and youth across the country...

Yikes! We've got to get this done before July 1!! Please help!
Sometimes I just don't do well asking for money. We have our 10th anniversary coming up July 1. Donations up to $5000 will be matched, so we can raise $10,000 without having a dinner, dance or auction. For the past 10 years, ...

Plenty of wisdom in this article.

Sometimes going for a walk is way more complicated.
This sign didn't stand near the obviously dangerous oil pump area. No, it was perched on an empty field in the park, inexplicable even to me. My layover day—besides getting things done, a chance for "me" time. My time in Kans...

Winter. Be gone!
When I accepted the invitation to give a talk in Mokena, IL on Feb. 28, I naively hoped that winter would be in decline, so I said I'd drive up (from Kansas where I'm filming Worn Out Welcome Mat - KS) in Tillie2, my (sorta) ...

My latest Tillie2 adventures, such as they are. Sigh.
For those of you following my travels on Facebook or through this blog, you might have picked up on some "issues" with my new Tillie2 that I acquired at the end of September 2014. Here's the latest... Ironically, my previou...

giving voice and visibility to homeless children, youth and families...
Introduction
For a quarter of a century I've worked with homeless families, teens and adults, realizing that they have a slippery upward slope to climb.

Part of the problem, I've found by talking to countless people--legislators, policy wonks, ordinary folk--is lack of awareness. So, in true Nilan fashion, I set out to do whatever I can do to change that.

HEAR US Inc. is my nonprofit that strives to give voice and visibility to homeless children and youth. It's been an amazing journey!
