Siri? Alexa? Google? Andrea?

By whatever name, the Internet of Things (IoT)* is here to stay, and noise-cancelling, hands-free, voice-operated technologies are a vital and integral feature. According to Wikipedia, “Experts estimate that the IoT will consist of almost 50 billion objects by 2020.”

Although some cite the early 1980s as the beginnings of the IoT, it has existed in science fiction for much longer. In fact, voice-controlled computers have existed in fiction for at least 70 years.  The iconic command: “Tea. Earl Grey. Hot.” is familiar to Star Trek fans. Step-by-step, we are nearing the power of ubiquitous, voice-operated, computer connectivity. According to frog design, an extraordinarily innovative company:

“The future of the computer is to essentially make it disappear, so it is part of the environment—
a disconnected interface, so the house or the office or the building or the city is the computer.”

They have created a room that can be controlled by gestures and voice commands.

Putting voice-operated IoT into the hands - or voices! - of consumers, the Amazon Echo, along with the Alexa Fund, is frequently in the news these days. Asking Siri for directions or waking a phone with the words, “OK Google” are part of the everyday experience and put IoT in the hands of mobile users. Innovative individuals are also experimenting with IoT: for a DIY car PC project, Avatar-X used an Andrea Electronics USB-SA Array Microphone with its USB digital audio adapter for its excellent speech recognition capabilities, providing advanced noise cancellation in high-noise environments. As Avatar-X states,

“Touchscreens are great. . . But they still involve taking your eyes off the road, and that's never a good idea, not if you can avoid it. I decided the final step to making my Car PC project a success would be to add voice control.”

Voice-operated IoT applications require advanced audio input technology, in particular speech recognition microphones and noise reduction software. Andrea Electronics’ patented digital, beam forming and noise cancellation signal processing enables accurate far-field speech recognition performance from up to 14 feet away.  IoT and Andrea Electronics are a perfect match.

The DA-250 digital noise cancelling DSP module is one of the latest innovations from Andrea Electronics.  IoT market applications for the DA-250 digital noise canceling processor include: hands-free communications for consumer use, trucking, and police cruiser applications among others.

How will you use the IoT and Andrea Electronics technology?

*Wikipedia defines the Internet of Things as:  “the network of physical objects or "things" embedded with electronics, software, sensors, and network connectivity, which enables these objects to collect and exchange data.”

Andrea Electronics' peerless noise reduction software results from the combination of its commitment to research and to the creation of the highest level of end user experience. Founded in 1934, Andrea Electronics is a pioneer in the field and continues to be a leader in noise reduction software and the many facets of optimizing voice-driven applications and technologies. Early work in the field included development of avionic intercom equipment used by Boeing, Lockheed, Bell Helicopter, and Sikorsky. In 1990, Andrea Electronics formed a specific noise canceling division within the company and continues to evolve to meet the ever-changing demands of the market. Andrea Electronics' innovative technologies are currently used around the globe in the consumer, commercial, and military markets. Its past products are historically significant and are now showcased in the Henry Ford Museum and the Smithsonian.
Andrea Electronics' noise reduction software improves the intelligibility of voice audio as well as the accuracy of speech driven applications, particularly in high noise environments. A pioneer in the area of speech recognition software and hardware, Andrea Electronics' technologies have been used since the mid 1990s. Now used by companies such as Asus, Intel, Dell, and HP, Andrea Electronics' noise reduction software enables advanced audio and video conferencing, internet telephony, and advanced voice recognition software to function, even in high noise environments, by eliminating background noise. Growth in consumer use of voice-driven applications, particularly on mobile devices and in automotive computer technology, demonstrates the increasingly universal relevance of Andrea Electronics' innovative noise reduction software.

Andrea Electronics Provides Digital Noise Canceling Microphone to Norcon Communications, Inc.

We at Andrea Electronics are pleased to announce that we are delivering our DA-250, a digital noise canceling and digital signal processing circuit board, to Norcon Communications for integration into their Talk-Thru communicator Unit (TTU).

The TTU provides hands-free communication between people separated by security or isolation barriers and is the most widely used barrier intercom system of its type in the world. The new TTU-NC version of TTU incorporates Andrea Electronics’ DA-250 digital noise canceling module, reduces ambient noise detected within the customers’ speech, increasing operator intelligibility for settings such as subway and theater ticket windows when conducting business in noisy, real-world environments.

Satisfied customers using the new TTU-NC include: The 911 Museum, Augusta Entertainment Complex, the Beacon Theater, Barclays Center, Bay Area Rapid Transit, Brigham Young University, Central Arkansas Transit, Cleveland Metroparks, County Of Henrico, Milwaukee Miller Park, Red Bulls Arena, San Bruno Police Department, Tuscaloosa Amphitheater and the University of California among others.

The DA-250 digital noise cancelling DSP module is among the latest innovations from Andrea Electronics. Its modular design is targeted towards Original Equipment Manufacturers looking for a better microphone solution with ease of upgrade installation and increased audio system performance providing enhanced intelligibility for their customers. Market applications for the DA-250 digital noise canceling processor include: virtual teller machines, customer service kiosks,  intercom systems, fast-food restaurant drive thru order posts, and hands-free automotive communications, with consumer, trucking, and police cruiser applications.
