Ashiatsu is a type of massage therapy in which the therapist walks on the client's back, using bars and other props for support to vary pressure and weight. This modality has its roots in Asia, but today, several different versions of Ashiatsu massage are practiced around the world. Learning to perform Ashiatsu massage requires some advanced training, because indifferent technique could cause damage to the client's back.

Traditional Ashiatsu massage is based in Traditional Chinese Medicine. It is performed in both China and Japan by practitioners who have been trained to take a whole-body approach to wellness. In addition to offering massage to their clients, these practitioners may also assess diet, prescribe herbs, and use other treatment modalities to address the client's health problems.

In traditional Ashiatsu, the client lies on the floor in loose, comfortable clothing while the practitioner walks across his or her back, using the feet to target specific pressure points. A bar for support may or may not be used, depending on the practitioner. This form is also sometimes called barefoot Shiatsu, referencing the fact that the therapist is shoeless, and that the principles of Shiatsu, a massage technique which focuses on pressure points, are utilized in the massage.

Acupressure is one of the oldest and most widespread healing methods in the world. By using deep finger pressure at certain points, practitioners can reduce tension, increase circulation and offer relief for many complaints. It is a part of Chinese traditional medicine and often described as "acupuncture without the needles".

The head is the heaviest part of the human body. The entire weight of the head is directly borne by the neck and upper back muscles. Our daily activities can put stress on the tissues, tendons, ligaments, and muscles of the neck. Prolonged periods of sitting and working on a computer, long hours spent behind the driving wheel, bad posture, incorrect sleeping positions, and stress, all put a lot of pressure on the neck muscles. The muscles contract and tighten, resulting in pain. This pain, if left unchecked, can slowly creep up the neck and become a full fledged headache.  A neck massage is a very simple process and you can very easily give yourself a neck massage. To enhance the beneficial effects of the massage, you could also use some massage oil.

A neck massage can be administered with the subject sitting down on a comfortable chair or lying face down on a massage table. If you want to give yourself a neck massage, sit down on a comfortable, low-low back chair. Grab the Trapezius muscle (the sloping muscle that runs from the neck to the shoulders) between the thumb and finger of the opposite hand. Gently massage the muscle, all the way from the shoulders to the neck. Do the same for the other side. This process should be repeated a couple of times. Then use the fingers of both hands to gently massage the neck from the base of the neck to the head. Repeat this process until you feel completely relaxed and pain free.

 Cellulite massage is one type of therapy that is commonly used to reduce the appearance of cellulite. Cellulite is a type of fat that is close to the surface of the skin. The fat cells are pressed against the underlying skin structure, which leads to a distinctive "cottage cheese" appearance. Cellulite is most apparent on the hips, thighs and stomach. During cellulite massage, the massage therapist manipulates the affected area with his or her hands or a roller. The roller allows for a deeper, more intensive massage experience. 

Many cellulite massages also include a seaweed wrap, which can help tighten and smooth the appearance of the cellulite. Another type of cellulite massage uses essential oils, such as peppermint. These oils are purported to have stimulating property, which helps improve the tone and appearance of the affected area. Whether they work or not, essential oils are a nice addition to a massage session.

The right cream is only one part of an effective at-home cellulite massage. Application is important as well. Apply the lotion and rub the skin firmly. Some people rub in a circular direction, while others rub firmly up and down the body. The direction that the cream is massaged in is less important than the force. The goal is to stimulate the circulation of blood to the skin, so vigorous and firm pressure is required.

Piriformis syndrome is a disorder which results when the piriformis muscle compresses the sciatic nerve. The compressed sciatic nerve causes pain, tingling, numbness along the nerve path descending from the lower thigh down towards the legs. Other than the modern medical treatment, other alternative methods such as physical therapy, massage and stretching have found to be very beneficial in strengthening the muscles of the abdomen and the back in order to reduce the strain on the piriformis muscle.

Massage therapy when used along with ice massage is helpful in providing immediate relief. Some experts have recommended alternating heat and ice massage to provide prompt pain relief. Other than this, simple stretching exercises also do wonders for reducing pain and improving range of motion substantially.

Massage is one of the effective modalities to manage the piriformis syndrome. Massage should only be done by a qualified and trained massage therapist. Some points to remember are:
It is important to massage the gluteal region.
Patient should lie down in a prone position.
The massage therapist will then start massaging from the sacrum and down to the head of the femur.
This helps in stimulating the rotator muscles in the hip which in turn reduces the strain on the muscle.
While massaging, the therapist will apply deep pressure depending upon the pain threshold of the patient.

An oriental massage is an ancient form of therapy designed to relieve pain and tension in joints and muscles, reduce stress, enhance circulation of blood and preserve an overall healthy body and peaceful mind. This type of massage originated in the Far East and is based on the theories of Chinese medicine using the concept of energy, or chi, that flows throughout the body. 

This form of therapy treats tender parts of the body by massaging them with the fingers, thumbs and palms with the use of massage oils. There are several types of oriental massage methods but the most popular ones are Thai, Shiatsu and Indonesian-Javanese massages, all of which focus on the pressure points of the body, similar to Chinese acupuncture methods.

Oriental massage has become a popular form of therapy throughout the world. Different methods of Chinese and Japanese massage are used in drug rehab centers and and in hospitals for cancer and acquired immunodeficiency syndrome (AIDS) patients. Lymphatic massage is a technique used to encourage lymph flow in the body. Lymph is the clear fluid produced by the lymph nodes, located in the neck, chest, underarms, groin, and abdomen. A healthy flow of lymph supports the body's immune system in fighting off toxins responsible for viruses and infection. The lymphatic system  comprised of 500 to 600 lymph nodes, in addition to the spleen, tonsils, thymus, and adenoids  is the body's filter system for dangerous toxins and disease-promoting bacteria.

For this reason, the health of the lymphatic system is crucial to the body's ability to heal. the objective of lymphatic massage is the stimulation and subsequent opening of the lymphatic glands, resulting in an increased flow of lymph. The potential benefits of this type of massage or lymph drainage  include, but are not limited to, decreased joint pain and the pain of arthritis, mood and energy enhancement, infrequent infections, and improved skin conditions. It may also alleviate migraines and menstrual cramps. 

The focus of this massage is primarily on the upper body, including the face, neck and underarm regions. Typically, the touch is incredibly light, as the lymphatic vessels are located directly beneath the skin and respond to .5 to 8 ounces of pressure per square inch (about 6.5 square centimeters). This light application of pressure mimics the natural rhythm of the lymphatic system, resulting in a simple, non-invasive encouragement of lymph flow.
