Important Update to the Google Quality Guidelines!

Google just updated their Google My Business (ie. Places) Quality Guidelines.  This is a big deal, so if you have a local business G+ page you need to read this very closely.

One or two quick notes... "virtual" offices specifically addressed for the first time (part of my feedback, thank you).

180˚about face on the use of "descriptors" (geographic or service), no longer allowed.

Quite a few examples provided to help illustrate specific cases, rather helpful.

Requirement to use the most specific, SINGLE category instead of adding everything you can find.  Something about "Google can also detect category information from your website and from mentions about your business throughout the web."

Useful insight about the manner in which Google will determine your position in the local rankings.

Multi-location businesses - "All business locations within the same country must have the same name for all locations."  ie. the exact same name, but there are exceptions to the rule which make it fuzzy.

And some interesting rules about professional or practitioner listings...

So, as always, when Google updates their Quality Guidelines, you should read them and make whatever changes are necessary for your listing to comply.  Otherwise, be forewarned...

"Google reserves the right to suspend access to Google My Business or other Google Services to individuals or businesses that violate these guidelines"

Let me know what you think.

Make Your Company or Brand G+ Page a Local G+ Page...

For those who thought the day would never come, it is here.  You can now (sort of) combine your Company (or Brand) G+ Page with your Local G+ Page (the one that appears on Google Maps and Local Search).

Ever since Google started auto-upgrading Local G+ or Places Pages with the social features of G+, lots of single location businesses discovered they now had TWO G+ pages to keep up; a Company page and a Local Page.

It's been a big pain in the ass and people have been bitchin' about this for months because they originally created a Company Page and now have a bunch of circles and posts and stuff, but don't want to have to start over with the socially-enabled Local Page.

Well, good news.

I actually thought this would never happen, but Google announced today they have figured out a way to turn your Company Page into a Local Page (so it appears on Maps).

This is a great solution if...

You have a single location, (not multiple locations).

You have an active Company Page, but not much going on with your verified Local Page.

You don't want to manage two social pages.

The process is not without its limitations which you should consider carefully.  You will lose things like your custom url, followers on your Local page, posts, photos, videos... none of that gets transferred over.

Also Managers of the Local Page will not get access to the Company page automatically, they will have to be invited again.

For many people this is a HUGE deal.  Take a look at the help doc below to see how to access the feature.  It is only available from the Owners account, not a Managers account.

Let me know if you think this is a good deal, have questions or if you run into problems.

So last weekend was kinda slow.  But things got a bit more exciting when I won an all-expense paid trip to the emergency room plus a two-day stay with the deluxe accommodations.

And my friends at +Kurtz & Blum, PLLC Raleigh sent me this bonus prize for being such a good sport.

You can't win if you don't play.

Did you know that you can add some text formatting to your G+ Posts?

You can make your text BOLD

Or you can put it in italics

And even use strikethrough
