Damn, Fedora upgrade from F27 to F28 failed and left me with a lobotomized main machine. This must not happen! Happened regularly with Fedora and one time too often now. I guess I'm going back to Debian.

Hallo liebe Kreislinge!
Felix

After KKK comes CCC: Trump pardons the concentration camp commander

Trump just pardoned a Sheriff who ran concentration camps instead of prisons. $44million in lawsuit settlements aside, this guy is a monster who ordered deadly torture against prisoners, caused suicide rates in jail to skyrocket, played a key role in sexual child abuse, racial profiling plus many more things that finally got him convicted.

In other words: this is your textbook nazi Gauleiter, and Trump just said that's OK. So much for checks and balances.

I was just thinking of finally selling my M-Audio Fast Track Ultra 8R only to find out that it won't work with any up-to-date Windows or OS X version. Although this will make it almost impossible to sell it now it's quite funny in a way: What was a Win/Mac only device back in 2010 has turned into a Linux-only device over time!

So let's get back in history...
When I bought this device what I really needed was a kind of remote controllable rack mixer. Many such devices have been launched within the last couple of years (most prominently the Behringer X32 Rack and X Air series and the Soundcraft Ui series) there was no such thing back in 2010. So I decided to build something myself with a Linux laptop, an USB audio interface and a software mixer with a couple of plugins. I didn't need many channels and latency wasn't critical so this worked quite well in the end. But first there were some issues to solve.

I needed to find the right audio interface. That wasn't that easy. I would have loved to get a MOTU UltraLite (it had a hardware mixer section as well) but it seemed a hopeless endeavour to get it to work with Linux. I finally settled on the M-Audio Fast Track Ultra 8R. I knew it didn't work flawlessly with Linux but some forums indicated that it seemed at least usable. How wrong!
While it was relatively easy to get it to play a sound it would click regularly and there was no controll over the mixer and effects section on it.

So what to do now? Well, I started looking into the USB audio stack in the Linux kernel, started sniffing the Windows USB communication etc. and found that I just didn't know enough to get it working.
That's when I contacted +Daniel Mack to ask for help. And help he did! First, he gave hints what to try, offered small patches to try etc. We did proceed but it was only when +Aurélien Leblond joined in who had bought a Fast Track Ultra and wanted to help development: He kindly donated a Fast Track Ultra to Daniel who finally could work with the device at hand.
To make a long story short, this turned into a major overhaul of the USB audio stack by Daniel, after being encouraged by Daniel I even wrote and committed my first real patch set for the kernel (adding mixer controlls for the device) and finally: Now the Fast Track Ultra is a Linux-only device!

(On a side note I had a couple of nice beers with Daniel and some other very nice Linux people in Berlin as well as a result of this story ;-) )

Lessons learned:
1.) Don't ever buy a device that isn't standard compliant (if there is a standard for that class of devices).
2.) Open source can really be fun. Even kernel development.
3.) Berlin has quite some nice bars.

Without even looking I'm pretty sure a new bunch of texlive packages has arrived in Fedora.

Hmm, welche der Antwortmöglichkeiten beantwortet die Frage?
