The aim of World Asthma Day is to raise awareness, care and support for those affected by asthma. Whilst the primary focus is supporting the person with asthma, support may also extend to family, friends and caregivers.
Asthma is a chronic disease of the lungs which causes breathing problems. Symptoms of asthma include breathlessness, coughing, wheezing and a feeling of tightness in the chest.
These symptoms vary in frequency and severity. When the symptoms are not under control, the airways can become inflamed making breathing difficult. Whilst asthma can not be cured, the symptoms can be controlled enabling people with asthma to live full lives.
World Asthma Day is supported by the organization GINA, the Global Initiative for Asthma which works with health care groups around the world to help raise awareness. GINA is an initiative taken by the US based National Heart, Lung and Blood Institute (NHLB). World Asthma Day is also supported by the World Asthma Foundation.

Dr. Himanshu Garg Best Pulmonologist Gurgaon, Founder Director Aviss Health, Centre for Respiratory Disorders organized the first Haryana Chest Summit in Gurgaon which was a huge success. It was attended by 200 physicians majorly chest specialists of the region. Dr Himanshu Garg expressed "As one of the earliest Respiratory physician to move to Gurgaon I have been witness to the exponential rise in Respiratory diseases stemming from the persistence of smoking culture in rural hinterland and rising pollution in urban areas. The looming epidemic is staring us in the face, so we assembled Respiratory Physicians from the whole region under one roof to strategize and plan a way forward. We were fortunate to get blessing of His Excellency Prof Kaptan Singh Solanki governor of Haryana who inaugurated Haryana Chest Forum and the Divisional Commissioner Mr D. Suresh who gave the awards for exemplary work in the field".

Chronic Obstructive Pulmonary Disease (COPD) is not one single disease but an umbrella term used to describe chronic lung diseases that cause limitations in lung airflow. The more familiar terms 'chronic bronchitis' and 'emphysema' are no longer used, but are now included within the COPD diagnosis. The most common symptoms of COPD are breathlessness, or a 'need for air', excessive sputum production, and a chronic cough. However, COPD is not just simply a "smoker's cough", but a under-diagnosed, life threatening lung disease that may progressively lead to death.
Main risk factors for COPD
• Tobacco smoking
• Indoor air pollution (such as biomass fuel used for cooking and heating)
• Outdoor air pollution
• Occupational dusts and chemicals (vapours, irritants, and fumes)

Chronic obstructive pulmonary disease is a lung disease that is characterized by a persistent reduction of airflow. The symptoms of COPD are progressively worsening and persistent breathlessness on exertion, eventually leading to breathlessness at rest. It tends to be under¬diagnosed and can be life ¬threatening. The more familiar terms “chronic bronchitis” and “emphysema” have often been used as labels for the condition.
Risk factors
The primary cause of COPD is tobacco smoke (including secondÂŹhand or passive exposure). Other risk factors may include:
a. indoor air pollution (such as solid fuel used for cooking and heating)
b. outdoor air pollution
c. occupational dusts and chemicals (such as vapours, irritants, and fumes)
d. frequent lower respiratory infections during childhood.
