Menu

For over 60 years Alan Hooker’s love of preparing fresh foods, and the engaging quality of eating from The Ranch House garden’s bounty with others was legendary. Bringing the garden into the restaurant was his legacy, and we are committed to continuing that tradition, and using fresh ingredients in our scratch kitchen. All of our produce is organic and sourced locally from small farms. All of our seafood is the highest level of sustainability, our meats are organic, grass-fed, free-range and raised antibiotic and cruelty-free. Our menu changes daily so that we can bring you the best quality ingredients, and produce in its peak season. No freezers, no fryers or microwaves… only good fresh food.

Facts: Least expensive glass of Cab, $11.00. Least expensive bottle of wine, $60.00. We enjoyed mushroom streusel appetizer, $12.00, and shared a delicious duck and dirty rice with brocolini dish, $32.00. However, the waiter (actually the bar tender subbing as waiter) failed to give us a second plate, which we gladly would have paid for, which left us with a "Ef you for sharing an entre" feeling. Our tip reflected his lack of grace. All that said, the setting is lovely, especially the intimate outdoor private "rooms," divided by dense bamboo. Very dry though, due to the prolonged drought, thus, we presume, no candles or flowers on tables. Difficult to see our meal. Recommendation: some kind of fireproof dim lights on tables and more grace shown to your customers, no matter whether we are spending a lot of a little. Even our modest meal came to over $80.00. Sad we were made to feel unappreciated. Just sayin'....

I just went, there are new owners. They are sprucing up the place, and the food was amazing!! The setting is beautiful. Gardens, koi ponds, bamboo, and water fountains surround the tables. Go!

Food was pretty good, but they were out of tuna and didn't notice until we had to ask about our missing appetizer. Beef was over cooked and staff was a little overwhelmed.

Totally forgettable rubber chicken at sky high prices. Major points given for friendly and accommodating service even when our meal was clearly not going well.

Although this restaurant is very expensive and probably somewhat over-priced, they do have an amazing setting to enjoy a meal in. For that very special occassion, this is certainly one of the best in Ventura County.

The Ranch House has been a beloved institution for decades, literally Paul Newman's favorite restaurant. Founded by Allan Hooker it was one of the first restaurants to feature at least one vegetarian entree at all times. The restaurant is situated in a garden with tables both inside and on a porch overlooking the herb/flower garden and throughout a surrounding patio. At all times of year it is a wonderful atmosphere to enjoy a meal. The food is excellent. Ranging over a wide spectrum, there are a sufficient variety for each person in the family. In particular our family likes the pate for an appetizer and the fish dishes for main courses although the steak is always good. The New Orleans delight ( meringue, coffee ice cream and caramel sauce ) is worth the trip alone. We have returned to the The Ranch House for forty years on special occasions and just for an excellent meal and have never been disappointed in either the food or the service. In addition, the wine list is outstanding. If you haven't been you have a treat in store. P.S. They also sell separately their home baked breads which are excellent as well as herb preparations.
